The S220 SoloCam is a wireless solar outdoor camera that stands out for easy charging, solid image quality, and strong performance when the detection settings are tuned correctly. The solar panel can keep it running with only a few hours of sun, and the cameras can deliver fast notifications and video loading. Range from HomeBase 3 is weaker than the Eufy Cam 2 Pro, and app behavior can be inconsistent, with delayed event uploads or missing footage until storage is reformatted. Long term durability is the biggest concern, with repeated reports of failures after about a year or two, especially around the solar panel and moisture intrusion.

Common Questions (5)

  • Many units are reported to work well for about 1 to 2 years, then develop issues such as solar-panel burn spots, charging failure, or moisture inside the housing. Direct-sun placement can help them survive longer, but it can also accelerate weather exposure and panel wear.

  • No. The cameras can keep up with roughly 3 hours of sun per day, and the solar panel is described as a bonus rather than a requirement for all-day direct sun. Adding a solar panel can also help by taking the brunt of the sun and letting the camera be mounted in a more protected spot.

  • It can be reliable when detection settings and zones are configured correctly, with notifications and video loading within a few seconds. It can also miss recordings or delay showing recent events in the app, even with sensitivity turned up.

  • The S220 is reported to work best if you already have a HomeBase 3, but its range from HomeBase 3 is not as strong as the Eufy Cam 2 Pro. Setup can also be finicky, with one workaround being to connect through a phone hotspot and match the SSID name to the home router.

  • Mounting under an overhang can cause IR reflection at night and wash out the image if the camera is too close to the overhead surface. A separate solar panel can help because it lets the camera stay in a better position while the panel is angled for sun.

Our community has rated this post as helpful. If you agree, why not thank

I have six of these. They are great cameras
for about a year, then lots of issues.

The ones that are in direct sun, basically
never die. But they are also the first to have
the solar panels mess up and get burn spots.
Then the panel stops charging.

The cameras out in the sun also get hit with
all the weather. Ip67 holds up well for many
months. But all of my cameras, eventually fail
due moisture getting in the housing

Only way to fix them is to crack them open
and dry them out (no longer ip67). The few I
left in a bag full of silicone packets, even
after 3 months, never got rid of all the
moisture.

Overall, $60, I'd definitely buy them if you
have a home base 3 already. Every camera
has great range and camera quality. Just
don't expect them to last more than a 1-2
years.

Spot on, this aligns with my experiences as well. I thought about adding more of this until realized they don't hold up as well as I'd like the to with a lifespan of only 1-2 years.

I have 2 of the original home kit ones(1k). 3 years and going strong. Battery lasts about 9months and have never had an issue. Low traffic area, so they don't go off too often, but I am very happy with them, other than the clarity, which isn't horrible.

I just bought two of these recently and decided to put them side by side while I tested solar panels.
And... I'm about to return my two S220 cameras since they're so unreliable.
Because of my solar panel testing, I realized how bad these cameras were. With the same settings, side by side, occasionally only one of the two cameras would record anything! I set the sensitivity up 6 out of 7 on both cameras and I would still get only one of the two cameras detecting and capturing.
Also, another annoyance I found: If an event happens, my camera(s) willl notify me but if I go to the app and look for all events for that day, I won't see the recent events until much later. I'm guessing the cameras have to upload them first?** What that means is that if you get a notification and you want to immediately check it out... good luck!
**If it's true that these cameras won't post events until after they've uploaded them, that makes me wonder where and why they're uploading the recordings anywhere since I'm not using the home base and the recordings are supposed to only exist on the cameras themselves.
Unfortunately, I chose these because I had bought some of their other cameras before and I didn't realize how much events I was missing. So, I'm stuck with their cameras now.
If you do decide to buy these anyways, I also discovered something odd. While setting them up, they would not connect to my home's wifi. However, they would connect to my phone's wifi tether so I renamed my phone's wifi to match my router's wifi, set up the cameras, then turned my home's wifi back on.
Finally, I highly recommend adding solar panels, it makes a huge difference based on my testing. It could also prolong the life of your cameras by taking the brunt of the sun's rays or letting you hide your camera under something else.

I will also add my experience with Eufy products, that they are great......... FOR ABOUT A YEAR.

Then soon after or when it gets close to a year, pray to whoever you believe in because after that they start going.

I would suggest only buy Eufy products from Costco, because once this happens at least you can return. Eufy service wont do anything after warranty is up

I have two of these. Got them on eBay refurbished with a 2 year warranty. Ironically. Even with it being newer. The range is not that great from the homebase 3 compared to the Eufy Cam 2 pro. The solar panel is a bonus, but I still have it plugged up to a solar panel, but I can tilt the panel as necessary instead of the camera itself.

Agree with everyone else. I have these at 5 properties, 3 are oceanfront. They're great for a year or two. Eufy =Anker. The app is hit or miss. If you can't see previous footage, you have to reformat the storage to get them working again.

I have 2 of these and 3 of the s3 360 cams and they've been nothing but great. No app issues like have been mentioned. I get notified and can view the video within a few seconds of loading. You Have to double check the app and make sure you have the detection settings and zones properly set. And select the way you want to be notified. Mine mostly only see sun for a portion of the day and they have been great. They don't need sun for 8 hours, it can only use so much energy, so 3 hours is more than enough.
My only gripe is I tried to install them under the overhang on the house to keep them protected and that was a no go for the IR reflection at night. But that's all IR cameras, not specific to these. They were too close to the overhead and it was washing out the view.
