Will this match or beat a 5080 desktop? I heard that the performance difference is smaller than last gen

The 5090 laptop is barely better than the 5080 laptop. They're probably 35-40% weaker than the equivalent desktop GPU.

From benchmarks I've seen, it's around desktop 5070ti level with more VRAM.

Dang. And they charged way more for this weak laptop GPU.

A used 3080TI laptop with 16gb VRAM will run anything the P5 S5 Pro will better. If you're looking to upgrade and you already have an Xbox Series X or PS5 level machine, the performance will need to be 3x the current PS5. That doesn't exist yet in the laptop space. This 5090 laptop card is almost 2x the PS5. Ideally, you'll need 5080/5090 desktop performance before it'll be the same as the PS6/XboxSomethingY. What's my point? The 5090 is nice, but your gaming will be about the same as a console because that's what all AAA titles target. Wait till late 2027 for the laptop performance to catch up. A laptop 6090 will probably release in 2027 Q1-Q3. Then you'll be able to run all the games that come out. Till then, a 3080ti laptop will set you back about 1000 on ebay.

I think I'll wait until 2030 for the 1090TizB Ultra card. That way, the games wlll appear as if I'm looking out da window.

I used to giggle at these posts too. Search Moore's Law is Dead. Next gen specs were leaked a couple weeks ago. 5080 rasterization with 5090 ray tracing. This laptop is closer to 5060-5070 desktop. Do your own research. I'm advocating for a slick deal. This isnt it. Waiting isnt it. Searching for an older laptop with 12-16gb of ram is.

The only mobile GPUs that measure up to their desktop counterparts are the 5050 & 5060. Diminishing returns after that. 5070 is probably the worst because of same 8GB vram planned obsolescence as 5050 and a fraction of the desktop 5070 performance at a premium price.

A good rule of thumb is the current laptop GPU is around the performance of the previous generation desktop GPU minus one tier.So a laptop 5090 should perform near a desktop 4080. A laptop 4090 performs around a desktop 3080, etc.

I have a 4080etc with 12gb vram, runs two concurrent instances of AI like lightning. Maybe there's games it doesn't play but I'm a Diablo guy so it's blazing liquid fast on here.
Here's my laptop, bought last March new for $2399, here it is as a refurb almost a year later, holding its value like a champ

I liked the specs and performance then, and just as much now.

The price is now $3099. Any idea this would this drop again to $3000?

Currently $3099.

Still, it's by far the best deal available for a 16". 64GB Ram, 2 SSDs. I ran several benchmarks on it straight out of the box. All results were on par with what I expected from the components in the laptop. Solid deal.
