Community Reviews
This Rheem ProTerra hybrid heat pump water heater stands out for cutting hot water energy use sharply, especially in heat pump mode and in warm spaces like garages or basements. Real-world reports put usage around 1.3 to 2.5 kWh a day, with electric bills dropping by about half or more after switching from a standard electric or gas heater. Installation is described as straightforward if you already have 240 volts and a condensate drain, and rebates or tax credits can slash the upfront cost. Main caveats are slower recovery in heat pump only mode, reduced performance in cold climates, and the 50 gallon size feeling tight for larger households or long showers.
Common Questions (5)
For a 2-person home it is usually enough, but long showers or back-to-back use can drain it. Households with 4 people or more may need to use eco/high-demand settings, schedule resistive backup, or move up to a larger tank like 65 or 80 gallons.
Yes, installation is described as straightforward if you already have a 30A 240V circuit; the main extra work is adding a condensate drain and sometimes extending the hot/cold lines. Self-installs with SharkBite fittings were reported as easy, while homes without nearby 240V power may face added electrician cost.
Yes. Owners reported stacking a 30% federal tax credit with utility or state rebates, including instant rebates around $750 to $1,100, which can drop the out-of-pocket price dramatically. Checking local energy-efficiency programs can make the deal much cheaper.
Yes. It needs surrounding heat to pull from, so it performs best in warm spaces like a garage or basement that stays mild. In freezing conditions it can lose efficiency and may cool the room noticeably, especially in heat-pump-only mode.
In heat-pump mode it can cut water-heating electricity roughly in half versus a traditional tank, with reported usage around 1.3 kWh/day in summer and about 2.5 kWh/day in winter for a family of four. Several owners also reported monthly costs around $6-$7 or major gas-bill savings after switching.

You want to upsize these as much as your space allows. 50 gal is probably ok for a 2 person house as long as someone doesn't take long-ass showers. A 20 minute shower with a high flow 2.5gpm showerhead will deplete this tank.
I'm on propane and it will probably still save me money.
If you switch from a resistive electric ater heater to this you already have that in place. But some people are on natural gas or propane and might not have 240 volts near it.
fyi, the 80 gallon model is also 20% off. Seems these go on sale a lot.

Have been on sale for similar pricing.
DEFINITELY Should get the biggest unit possible especially if you have guests often.
Lots of dummies in certain states don't know how to shop around.
So many get Mini Split AC/Heat pumps pricing quotes of $5k-$10k (or more) for a $500-$1000 unit.
Some(lots) are installers posting those ridiculous prices to try and convince others to pay it.
Very sleazy business.
1 guy I have used for 4 homes and 3 referrals(in 2 years) of complete CAC replacements all of a sudden wanted $11k where all others were $5k-$6.5k because it was the summer.
To replace the defective blower fan wanted $2500 - bought it on ebay for $125
But I specifically set mine to heat pump only mode to ensure we get max savings and then if we ran into a no hot water situation we could decide if we adapt our usage or turn on resistive.
But we have never even once run out of hot water, so working great for me.

Besides that, that model doesn't have the backup resistive heat. Something you want.

And your calculation is also assuming 100% hot water coming and draining it super fast, which technically is true but who cranks up the shower temperature to maximum? Feels like even in the rare case someone does this it's better to simply increase the water temp and not use 100%. But to each their own I guess.
