This Rheem ProTerra hybrid heat pump water heater stands out for cutting hot water energy use sharply, especially in heat pump mode and in warm spaces like garages or basements. Real-world reports put usage around 1.3 to 2.5 kWh a day, with electric bills dropping by about half or more after switching from a standard electric or gas heater. Installation is described as straightforward if you already have 240 volts and a condensate drain, and rebates or tax credits can slash the upfront cost. Main caveats are slower recovery in heat pump only mode, reduced performance in cold climates, and the 50 gallon size feeling tight for larger households or long showers.
Running the heater in heat pump only mode can cut electricity costs substantially versus resistive operation.
Installation can be straightforward for DIY setups, with condensate drain work being the main added step.
State and utility incentives can significantly reduce the effective purchase price for switching to a hybrid heat pump water heater.
Heat pump mode can deliver low daily energy use figures when the unit maintains set temperatures in warmer conditions.
The unit can switch to resistive backup during high demand, which helps prevent running out of hot water for some households.
Cold weather operation can reduce heat pump efficiency and may cool the surrounding space where the heater is installed.
Back-to-back heavy hot-water use can deplete a 50-gallon tank, requiring scheduling or resistive augmentation.
A 30A 240V circuit requirement can add installation cost if the home lacks proper electrical service near the heater.
Long-term maintenance may be harder because the anode rod could be difficult to access with the heat pump sitting on top of the tank.

Two years ago , I got quotes from plumbers . They would not install a heater I purchased in my own . They offered to provide the Rheem heat pump water heater if they installed . Quotes ranged from $4500 to $6000 (including the labor and heat pump).
One last comment . The heat pump produces water discharge . You need to have a drain nearby or install a discharge pump and run tubing to home's utility sink or drain or into your waste line.

Also an engineer, and love data
Never paid much attention to recovery it seems fast to me, but we never have run out of hot water even forced to heat pump only mode. But higher demand users can always allow it to use resistive heating as emergency heat.
Every change is part of a bigger whole plan.
Started with hot water, now installed in the same vicinity is the solar inverter, and it produces heat that feeds the heat pump, and the heat pump keeps the inverter temp lower.
Next is whole home spray foam insulation, so already with solar I am net 0 on a power bill, soon as my grid interconnect goes thru, I'll start selling power back, and that is where the insulation will start to pay off, by lowering HVAC demands more left over solar to sell to the power company, and we can have our house 68F on a 100F day without really straining the system.
Especially if you cool the home at night and just allow that "bank" of cool air to be bu ilt at night for the day to come where the insulation will maintain it.

I have saved $$$$ in gas bills from my previous hot water heater. PGE was basically looting on winter gas bills.
50gallon is small though - I'll pull the trigger on 80gallon if I can sell mine on marketplace.
