These IronWolf NAS drives are framed as CMR, 5400 RPM storage built for quiet, steady NAS use. The line is praised for fitting backup and media libraries, and the lack of SMR is treated as a real advantage for NAS workloads. Long running Seagate Exos and FireCuda drives are still working after two years, but there are also reports of IronWolf and other Seagate drives failing, sometimes just after warranty. The pricing also looks weak next to larger Seagate models and older deals, making this a practical NAS option with some reliability and value concerns.

Common Questions (4)

  • Some drives have failed after years of use, including one in an Unraid server running around 30-40°C on average, while other IronWolf drives in mixed NAS setups have kept working. The comments point to normal hard-drive variability rather than a guaranteed outcome.

  • The IronWolf line is CMR, not SMR. That matters for NAS use because CMR is generally preferred for sustained writes and RAID/NAS workloads.

  • At $109.99 for 6TB, the price per terabyte is weaker than larger IronWolf options like the 14TB IronWolf Pro at $229. The deal is mainly attractive if you specifically need a 6TB NAS drive rather than the best $/TB.

  • Yes, the spec is 5400 RPM rather than 7200 RPM. That lower speed can be a better fit for quieter NAS use and lighter workloads.

I've got HP Enterprise(HGST) drives from 11 years ago that are STILL RUNNING. They don't make them like they used to!
Yeah used enterprise is the real Slickdeal. I've got some exos I need to test but very nervous as they're my first personal Seagate non Constellation drives

All my 6TB Red Plus died right after 3yr warranty. Terrible generation. My 10TB and HGST stuff are good after 5 yr still
Same for me. WD and HGST have been rock solid. Seagate never so.

Go onto the WD website and get drives that won't keep failing. I have had way too many Seagate drives fail. (I actually worked in their Scott's Valley facility for 1.5 years). I have chatted the WD people up in the little chat app several times and gotten them to give me a 20% off code.

+If you got that warning you are doing something wrong, backblaze is a well known data center. Since they are a data center they have a lot of hard drives. They publish a list that shows the reliability date of the drives they have in their data centers. Since they have a high volume their reliability metrics are much better than anecdotal evidence from random people on the internet! There is ZERO chance this website contains malicious activity!

thanks for posting OP Smilie .. at the risk of starting another " SMR is just fine! " " No it's not ! " flame war Stick Out Tongue I think these are CMR drives I'm sure someone will jump in and correct me if I'm wrong Smilie ... which apparently is better than SMR (again a LOT of debate about this with a lot of people insisting SMR is just fine and cheaper to boot)

I know everyone's going to have their own story about which hard drives are the best but .. and apologies it's not even the same kind of hard drive Smilie (it's seagate but one is a seagate exos and the other is a seagate firecuda) ... but snagged 8 TB versions of those back in spring 2023 to install into my desktop PC.. not the "normal" use for an exos by any means but honestly I was just looking for cheap storage for the large amount of files I have ... over two years later they're both still working great and have seen frequent use.

Out of paranoia I copy files to both hard drives so if one drive fails I have another and I periodically back the files up onto yet another mechanical hard drive via a usb sata dock with said mechanical drive not normally attached to the PC... which could be a good use for this too , just plug it into a sata dock if you're old fashioned like me and manually back files up instead of using NAS like smarter people do Stick Out Tongue ... I had a WD Red Plus 2 TB drive installed in the desktop PC for years before upgrading for file storage which also worked great (it's used nowadays as one of the older mechanical drives used to back files up onto on the sata dock).

That is really strange! Not knocking malwarebytes it's supposed to be very good - maybe too good if it's blocking innocent websites Stick Out Tongue .. but yes that's a legit website Smilie .. I'm guessing there's a way to tell malwarebytes "calm down the website is legit just let me go to it?" Smilie ... try that see if it works.

From what I've seen online backblaze is frequently quoted for their published reports of the various hard drives they have installed and how long each model hard drive lasts so they're a good resource Smilie ... you can search their website listed above by model number for your hard drive to see how often that particular model of hard drive failed according to backblaze (I'm guessing backblaze uses a wide variety of hard drives and helpfully reports which model number hard drives failed and how many of them failed)

I'm not sure where you're seeing all this debate but I've mostly seen widespread agreement that DM-SMR drives (the only kind available to consumers) are undesirable and hardly ever worthwhile. Ironically, they tend to be available in lower capacities and their pricing is rarely appealing. I haven't seen many people arguing in favor of SMR drives. Anyway, it's irrelevant to this deal, as there are no SMR drives in the IronWolf line.

Great, I am looking forward these drives for my NAS. The spec actually says it's 5400rpm instead of 7200rpm. 5400 rpm is perfect for me.

Have a mixed drive NAS and I'm running 2x 6TB WD Red Plus drives and 2x 6TB Ironwolfs.

Only the WD drives have failed...not sure what to think of that, but in the past I remember similar with my computer hard drives.
No experience with the Seagate drives, but I've had (2) 4tb WD red drives set up in a mirror for work data and pictures and a stand alone 6tb red drive for my plex library running for 12 years or a little longer with no issues in a tiny HP ProLiant server. I think the red drives were from before WD came up with three different labels for them, can't remember. I'll be replacing/upgrading all of it with something new in the next year.

Honestly from what I've seen online myself I tend to agree, I personally would avoid the SMR drives just because of the reservations expressed about it... it was .. cripes years ago I'd be hard pressed to find the slickdeals threads now Smilie ... but I do remember some hard drives appearing as a slickdeal that were SMR which touched off a raging debate, some people were posting " Avoid, SMR is bad!" , others replied " What are you talking about I use SMR drives all the time they're great and they're cheap!" and next thing you knew there was a flame war going on Stick Out Tongue (I personally do my best not to flame people Smilie but ... there have been some pretty heated discussions on the topic that I saw on slickdeals put it that way Smilie )

Thanks for confirming what I thought too, I had a feeling they weren't SMR drives but it's nice to have someone with a Teacher level of reputation step in to confirm it Smilie ..
