http://www.missiontrav el.org/- If you are ever going on a humanitarian or mission trip (working with some kind of a non-profit), don't book your airfare until you've checked missiontravel.org first. With contracts from airlines for (oftentimes significantly) lower fares if it qualifies as a humanitarian flight. They can also book air originating from any country, not just the USA.

Typically at least 21 days before travel is best - studies show that rates are best on Tuesdays in the afternoon, believe it or not.
You can look at fare predictors on various sites like Kayak.com and Bing.com/Travel which can help you find the best fares.
Also look at multiple airports near where you are leaving and going to for the best deal.
Holiday travel is usually costly and difficult - think delays.
Look at alternate days to leave and return. ex: when will most people fly, try another day if your schedule permits.
