The RG406H stands out as the stronger portable retro handheld, with a T820 chip that handles PS2, GameCube, and especially N64 better than cheaper H700 or A133 models. Its 4.3 inch 4:3 screen and controls suit classic systems well, and the compact size is easier to carry than the larger RG556. The RG556 leans more toward PSP play, with a great OLED display and 1080p upscaled PSP, but its wider body and less precise sticks make it less comfortable for some 3D games. Both benefit from a better microSD card and a fresh setup, since bundled cards are often unreliable.

Common Questions (4)

  • The RG556 has a nice AMOLED display and is especially strong for PSP, including 1080p upscaled PSP. The RG406H is still favored for 4:3 systems and portability, but the RG556's screen is the standout feature.

  • The RG406H is the better pick for portability and controls. The RG556 is larger and wider, which makes it more unwieldy for portable play, while the RG406H has nicer controls and is easier to carry.

  • Both can play up to PS2 and GameCube, but the RG406H is the safer choice for native-format play. The RG556 can handle some titles, yet PS2/GC performance is inconsistent and more demanding games can be a crapshoot.

  • It does not charge reliably with just any USB-C cable and brick. Use the small included cable with a 5V power brick, such as an older iPhone USB charger.

I ordered the RG406H without any games, a big mistake. Where do you get the games and do you just load it in an SD card?

FWIW, I had the RG406H and currently have the RG476H. I prefer the latter. Costs more but better CPU, smaller overall size, yet better / larger screen makes it best of both worlds in my mind.

That being said, the RG406H is still great.
I hold that same sentiment. I originally purchased my RG406H back in June on sale from AliExpress for $128.64 only for it to go on sale for much less than when I purchased it (using a coupon), but to add insult to injury, Anbernic releases the RG476H 3x months later which was what I would've preferred at first instead due to its button layout and joystick orientation. Not sure if you're aware, but both the RG406H and RG476H use the same Unisoc Tiger T820 chip.

I paid $70 for 128gb miyoo mini plus in 2023 I ended up just buying another microsd and loaded games. One issue I had was it mot charging properly. I attempted to rmeove battery reset and the plastic micro just connector piece broke off got stuck. I ended up ordering 4 replacmeent batteries off amazon for around $30. I dont play long sessions since my hands do get tired. Would be nice if it had mini hdmi out to play on tv
You just can't using any USB Type-C cable and brick to charge it. Just use the small cable that should've come included w/ it in combination w/ a power brick that's 5v. Any of those old Apple iPhone USB chargers they used to include w/ their phones back in the day will do.

I think someone else corrected me on the CPU, for some reason I thought the RG406H used the T618 but that might have been the 405.

Yeah, it was the ANBERNIC RG405V you just mentioned that used the T618, but what's ironic a/b your spiel is that there's the ANBERNIC RG406V which has the same exact mold and build as the 405, but it actually uses the T820 so I can see where your mishap originated from, lol...
