The RG406H stands out as the stronger portable retro handheld, with a T820 chip that handles PS2, GameCube, and especially N64 better than cheaper H700 or A133 models. Its 4.3 inch 4:3 screen and controls suit classic systems well, and the compact size is easier to carry than the larger RG556. The RG556 leans more toward PSP play, with a great OLED display and 1080p upscaled PSP, but its wider body and less precise sticks make it less comfortable for some 3D games. Both benefit from a better microSD card and a fresh setup, since bundled cards are often unreliable.

  • The RG406H uses the Unisoc Tiger T820 chip for stronger N64 performance.

  • The RG406H can play PS2 and GameCube titles in native format.

  • The RG556 offers an AMOLED display and upscaled 1080p PSP visuals.

  • The RG406H is more portable than the wider RG556 while keeping similar PS2 and GameCube capability.

  • The RG556 struggles with PS2 and GameCube beyond basic titles, making performance inconsistent.

  • The RG556's stick behavior can reduce precision for 3D control during gameplay.

  • The RG406H charging can be limited because it may require the small included cable and a 5V power brick.

  • The RG406H may be less ideal than the RG476H because the newer model released soon after.

From the ones around 40 bucks...would the rg35xx h be the best deal?
TrimUI Smart Pro, Anbernic 40xxh, & Anbernic CubeXX are similarly priced (~$45ish after code). I would check those out if you are looking at the RG35xx h.

TrimUI Smart Pro has the largest screen (5") but similar performance to the other XX devices.
The CubeXX has a 1:1 ratio 4" screen with a 720x720 resolution and probably the most comfortable ergonomics out of the 3.
The 40XXH has a 4" screen but it's 4:3 ratio.

The 406H is definitely the one I'd get if I didn't have one already. It can play up to PS2 and GC in native format nicely. While the 556 could also play the same, it's wider aspect and larger size it's a bit unwieldy for portable play. That said, it has a nice AMOLED screen if you care about but the controls aren't as nice as the 406H.
FWIW, I had the RG406H and currently have the RG476H. I prefer the latter. Costs more but better CPU, smaller overall size, yet better / larger screen makes it best of both worlds in my mind.

That being said, the RG406H is still great.

406H and 476H have the same CPU (T820). Definitely a much better screen on the 476H, though.

For some reason I thought the 406H had an older CPU, not sure why I thought that but you appear to be correct.

I've been wanting one for a while to share with my kids, so I just picked up a Miyoo Mini V4 for $37.44. I know the plus is bigger, but I wanted the smallest size for pocketability and to make it easier for their little hands.

You'll want one with the T820 processor (such as the Anbernic RG406H). While the H700 (Anbernic XX series handhelds) & A133 processor (TrimUI Smart Pro) may be able to play some n64 games, they won't play it particularly well though.

depends on what you want to play, anything ps1 or below, either the Anbernic RG 35XXSP or maybe the miyoo flip v2. I'm not familiar with the more expensive ones.

New to this emulator players: do they come preloaded with any games or an app to download games?
They typically come with games.

I do recommend buying a nicer SD card and either cloning the card's data or just doing your own setup via Tinyset or Doneset eventually. The ones they come with are dumpster quality tier and will likely die within the first few years.

Got a Miyoo Mini Plus a few months back for about $5 more than this. Great little unit... the card that comes with it is trash though and mine didn't even work. If you look on the Internet Archives there is something called "Done Set 3" and it is a huge collection of roms specifically curated for the Miyoo... Very very easy to choose what you want and just load up a new card with it. Comes with all the skins and themes and stuff for Miyoo and sets up a really useful folder structure. My only complaint would be how small some of the fonts are on a screen that size once ya start loading up PS1 games.
