Creality Space Pi is a filament dryer that helps pull moisture out of wet spools, which can improve print quality and rescue filament that has sat out for months. It has PLA and PETG presets, can be used while printing, and the drying cycle reportedly brought spools back to like new. The main drawbacks are that the unit is not sealed or airtight, so moisture can creep back in, and the touch display is poor. Noise is also noticeable, and the single spool version tops out around 70C, which may limit tougher materials.

Common Questions (5)

  • It heats a spool of filament to remove absorbed moisture, which can reduce stringing, brittleness, and other print defects. Drying is useful even if filament was stored with desiccant, because once it has absorbed water, heat is needed to drive it out.

  • Yes, it can be used while printing, and it has PLA and PETG presets with selectable run time. That makes it practical when you need to keep a printer running and do not have time for a full dry cycle first.

  • No, it is not fully sealed, so moisture can be reintroduced if filament sits inside for long periods. It works as a dryer, but it is not a substitute for airtight storage with desiccant between prints.

  • It is reported to be louder than a 3D printer, and the touch display is described as poor. It still works well for drying, but many would run it when they are not in the room.

  • The single-spool version reportedly tops out at 70C, while the 4-spool version goes to 85C. PLA spools should not be dried above about 50-55C, and 70C may be too low or too slow for tougher materials like nylon.

Thank you ,I need a printer and spool to go this drier correct ?
Yes, the printer will likely run you 199-800 depending on brand/style/size/options/multicolor or not. Spools of filament (1kg) will run $6-25'ish each. Amongst others Bambu brand printers are commonly recognized as one of the most user-friendly for amateurs/kids. The prior recommendation of a Bambu A1 mini (currently 199 via bambu or best buy with single color capability) is small but EXTREMELY user friendly. For 319 the bambu A1 (non-mini) is a typical size 3d printer with the same simplicity as the A1 Mini. There are MANY options but having had a dozen printers the A1/A1 Mini is my go-to for low frustration learning. When you get a printer be sure to look out for slickdeals for filament - I tend to buy 10 packs from aliexpress (some sellers ship from the USA and I have my order in the same week) because it drives the price down; and many 10 packs are available in assorted colors

Do I need one of these if I live in a desert?
Filament can be wet (which is to say it has absorbed moisture) from the factory, and can pick up moisture while it's stored between manufactured date and when you buy it. Once a filament is wet, storing it in a dry location//with dessicant is not enough to dry it. You need heat to expel the moisture from the filament. This is what dryers are for.

Apart from printing artifacts, stringing, etc., how would you know a spool needed to be dried? I've had some filament that seemed unusually brittle - but you would think that was too dry and not too wet.

That is exactly what happened to a bunch of spools my child took out of the vacuum sealed package and sat for a few months before it got used. Got a two spool dryer a few days ago and after running the 8 hour cycle it worked good as new.

Are these really shipping from a seller here in the US? No customs fee surprises?

I print directly from this drier. It has presets for PLA and PETG, I just select the time it should run. I assume that preheating also helps my 3d printer. I use it with FlashForge A5M. It often goes on sale for around $170. And this ~$210 combo works really well for me

I have a two bay like this and it's biggest fault is that it is not sealed so unless you're on top of moving it to humidity to controlled space, you've reintroduced water to the filament as it sits in the device. It's dumb

And the touch display is abysmal.

We have 3 printers that reside in our basement. they worked for a bit but no matter how much tinkering, replacement parts, etc we get, we have such a hard time printing simple things. We have a Ender 3, Kobra Go and a small 3d printer. Would this probably help?

I'm totally new to 3d printing, but I thought you would need to have an opening to let the moisture out while the dryer is heating / working. Then, after drying, you need to put the spool in a sealed environment (AMS, vacuum pack with desiccant beads, etc) to maintain it. Is that wrong?

You can also dry filament by putting it on your heated bed and covering it with a box. Unless you are drying filament a lot and need your printer constantly running. There are definitely cheaper options than this, and even cheaper filament dryers available.

I got one of these on sale at Microcenter. It is louder than my 3D printer. It has worked well, saved a few spools of filament, improved my prints. But, I don't want to listen to it, so I run it when I'm not going to be in that room. Not that convenient, but it does work
