Creality Space Pi is a filament dryer that helps pull moisture out of wet spools, which can improve print quality and rescue filament that has sat out for months. It has PLA and PETG presets, can be used while printing, and the drying cycle reportedly brought spools back to like new. The main drawbacks are that the unit is not sealed or airtight, so moisture can creep back in, and the touch display is poor. Noise is also noticeable, and the single spool version tops out around 70C, which may limit tougher materials.

Common Questions (5)

  • It heats a spool of filament to remove absorbed moisture, which can reduce stringing, brittleness, and other print defects. Drying is useful even if filament was stored with desiccant, because once it has absorbed water, heat is needed to drive it out.

  • Yes, it can be used while printing, and it has PLA and PETG presets with selectable run time. That makes it practical when you need to keep a printer running and do not have time for a full dry cycle first.

  • No, it is not fully sealed, so moisture can be reintroduced if filament sits inside for long periods. It works as a dryer, but it is not a substitute for airtight storage with desiccant between prints.

  • It is reported to be louder than a 3D printer, and the touch display is described as poor. It still works well for drying, but many would run it when they are not in the room.

  • The single-spool version reportedly tops out at 70C, while the 4-spool version goes to 85C. PLA spools should not be dried above about 50-55C, and 70C may be too low or too slow for tougher materials like nylon.

I'm totally new to 3d printing, but I thought you would need to have an opening to let the moisture out while the dryer is heating / working. Then, after drying, you need to put the spool in a sealed environment (AMS, vacuum pack with desiccant beads, etc) to maintain it. Is that wrong?
These aren't going to be completely airtight so moisture will be reintroduced if filament is left inside. The one I just bought from a different brand said to leave all the vents open when in use so the moisture can escape as it's being heated.

I am new to 3D printing here. If my research is right, then there isn't any benefit for me getting something like this over Sovol SH01 (two spools or larger spool) for $42 if all I print are nothing more demanding than PETG (A1M here).
Please let me know if my logic is wrong here.

I store my spools in airtight storage boxes with a 500 gram silicate pack in each with an hygrometer/temperature sensor in the box. Home Assistant logs & charts the humidity and temp for me. Humidity in the box averages around 18% within a few minutes after they're sealed. Though, I've ordered a Creality 2 spool dryer to get them extra dry.

For around $40, you can get Sovol SH02 with the same coupon code ($48.36 -$8 coupon) US warehouse. https://www.aliexpress.us/item/32...62636.html From what I see, they are about the same spec with two spools instead of one.

PS: I came across this interesting site (https://www.mytechfun.com/filament-dryers) regarding the filament dryers.

So it would be a good practice to dry any spools using this when I open them and then store in an airtight container with silicate? They'll be fine when I go to use them?

Over time they'll absorb a little moisture when outside the storage box while printing no matter what. But I do my best to keep them as dry as possible between uses, so they don't require as much drying.

I print directly from this drier. It has presets for PLA and PETG, I just select the time it should run. I assume that preheating also helps my 3d printer. I use it with FlashForge A5M. It often goes on sale for around $170. And this ~$210 combo works really well for me
What about TPU?

Doesn't look like there is an output port for the filament?

Hah, sounds like you are also researching a lot . I bought some TPU too, but the ams version. I was going to get some of the other softer versions but having to build special seperate boxes made me decide to wait until I tried the ams tpu first.

These units both don't look like they have an out port nor are they airtight so they wouldn't be good for the super soft tpu

Oh wait, I just watched the video for it. It DOES have an outport. But is it airtight?

It doesn't look like it's air tight. There are no rubber gasket seals on the opening.
