I have one of these and they are nice for getting a bit of smoke without having to have a separate smoker. I am lazy and Sous Vide over long smokes and this adds a nice flavor when I'm doing my finishing step which is generally at higher temperature. I have used it for a few hour long smokes and it takes a bit of an effort to keep it smoking without getting the temperature too high.

I have had one for years. It works perfectly. The trick is to know how to use it. I soak the wood chips first. The smoke does not come out right away. So,, if you're cooking something that cooks quickly, this won't work. Sometimes, it takes 30+ minutes, depending on temperature, for smoke to start coming out.

I have this. Sorta useless for me. I put pellets inside. They either ignite because the holes on top are too big, or don't smoke cause the heat is too low. I'm probably not using this correctly though.

Here's a quick hint on proper use. Load the smoker box with chips. Get a small propane torch and light the chips in one corner of the smoker box until they are flaming. Place the lid on the smoker box and place underneath your meat. The flame should go out after the lid is put on, but the coals and smoke should consume the rest of the chips while you're cooking. If grease drips on the box you may get a flare up, use a water spritz bottle to keep the flames down, being careful not to fully extinguish the coals in the smoker box. Now you're smoking!

I use mine with a propane grill - load chips on top rack - let them start smoking, add the meat and close the lid

I think these are on sale at the same price at HomeDepot. Of course YMMV. If you need one and have a trip to a HomeDepot, then check their BBQ isle.

I have several different type smoker boxes. The easiest, cheapest one is just use heavy duty aluminum foil, shape it like a boat, put in a handful of wood chips, loosely close it up, poke a few holes in the top for venting and place it on the fire or above the fire. But my favorite smoker is the stainless steel hollow cylinder closed at one end. Stand it on end, fill it with wood chips, light the top of it until it flames, allow it to burn for a few minutes, then lay it on its side on the grease tray of my propane grill, underneath the burners. It provides at least 1-1.5 hrs. of clean smoke, perfect for gas grilling.
