Walmart+ is being used for free shipping, grocery delivery, gas savings, and streaming perks like Paramount+ or Peacock, with Scan and Go and occasional early access adding value for some households. The strongest savings come from stacking renewal promos, Walmart Cash, and Amex offers, which can cut the effective cost to about $49 or even make a year nearly free. The main catch is that the renewal flow often shows $49 while the actual auto renewal is $98, and cancellation sometimes only leads to a refund or a later offer. Free delivery also has minimums on groceries, and Scan and Go can be inconvenient in crowded stores.
Members who want streaming perks, because the subscription includes Paramount+ or Peacock.
The Amex deal is structured as paying the full $98 Walmart+ renewal price and receiving about $49 back as a statement credit or Walmart Cash, making the effective cost $49. It is not a checkout charge of $49.
Yes, some cancellation flows surface a $50 Walmart Cash retention offer or a 50% off renewal offer. It may appear immediately during cancellation, later in checkout, or after removing payment methods, and it can be tied to the next renewal date.
The promo year renews at the regular $98 annual rate unless you cancel before renewal. Several accounts showed a $49-looking renewal screen, but the actual charge at renewal was $98 plus tax.
Grocery delivery still has a minimum order threshold, commonly $25 or $35, to qualify for free delivery. Non-grocery merchandise marked as shipping can ship free to home regardless of price, even very small items.
Walmart+ includes Paramount+ or Peacock as a member benefit, along with perks like fuel savings and occasional early access. Some members value the streaming benefit enough to justify the annual fee.
I went to cancel my membership earlier in the year and it gave me the 50% off renewal. I have a screenshot in my account showing the $49 price, but was charged the full amount. Only remedy by CS was to cancel and refund my membership.
If you had a screenshot and you were clearly overbilled, better off disputing the difference on the credit card so can keep the membership at the $49 price. If CS told you the only remedy was cancel and get $98 back when the offer in the screenshot said $49, that's their problem, not yours. The credit card company would be on your side.
Yeah, shame on us for assuming that when it says renews at $49 on October 31 in our account, it would actually renew at $49.
the terms are WHEN YOU SIGN UP are what prevails. If you are ever signing up for some kind of promotional price, whether this, a streaming subscription, magazine sub, AARP, etc, always know what your ongoing renewal obligation is, if any, when you sign up.
Auto renew can typically be removed soon after you sign up so you don't forget and get billed at a later date.
Sorry if telling people that it is THEIR responsibility to read the terms on these deals (and typically on SD, deals like this will clearly say AUTO RENEWAL at higher price) seems harsh. But getting upset when you are indeed billed what the terms told you would be billed when you SIGNED UP is simply your own fault. Sorry, but it is. Read what you are signing basically.
And if you did get sideswiped not expecting it, Walmart will cancel and refund you, but claiming you were overcharged is simply not true. YOU AGREED TO THE TERMS one year ago.
Mine renews in less than a month. Went to cancel today, and it offered $50 Walmart Cash to renew at the $98 price on December 3. Win-win. I'll use my AmEx card to pay for the renewal, and get $49 back when I pay $98 for membership. I accepted and took a screenshot of the offer.

Mine expires Nov 8. This was my 2nd year (got discount again last year). I have no offer, still says $98 annual. I suppose you can't get the discounted rate. three times.
edit to add: i canceled a few weeks ago. no offer to renew.
I just got off the phone with Walmart+ due to my renewal on Nov 1st was supposed to be $49 but they charged me $98. They did acknowledge it was a problem on their part and their solution was to cancel my membership and refund the $98 + tax charge. The rep told me a new $49 deal would be available starting on 11/13 and I should use the new promotion to renew my membership for $49 on 11/13.
This is the email I got on 10/14/25 when I was signed up for the $49 promotion that was on this forum back in October.
