Any opinions on MERV ratings? IIRC, my HVAC guy said MERV8 is fine, but don't go higher than MERV10 because of the extra strain it puts on your blower motor. Also, good deal, TY OP.

My understanding is that if you go higher merv then you should be more diligent about changing your filter and you should be OK.Personally I use Merv 8 and have 3 450sqft air purifiers for a 1000 sqft to do the heavy lifting of cleaning the dust and junk out the air.

This is usually all you need for your household. The purpose of HVAC filters is to protect the system (protect the evaporator coils from becoming clogged, protect the blower fins from accumulating debris/dust, etc). This will filter out everything that would cause a problem for the system, and then some.

If you want to purify the air, room by room air purifiers are the way to go.

Going with a more overly restrictive filter for your system than what is called for per the design, can cause the system to cycle in heat mode, and in A/C mode it can cause the evaporator coils to freeze up.

I see recommendations everywhere to get MERV 11 if you have pets for dander and fur. Any HVAC folks have thoughts?

My guy recommended `Lennox X6673 Healthy Climate HCF20-11 MERV 11 Filter Media` so I only buy this Frown about $33 each. I dont have pets or anything.

I agree with the discussion here as well. I recently upgraded my gas heater to heat pump so I can get AC as well. The filter that came with heat pump is merv8 which is sufficient to protect the unit. I had been thinking about upgrading to higher merv so I can get better air and avoid allergies. After doing the research, I realized it's best to buy high power air filter separately and just put it below the return air vent. I ended up getting the Winix Costco C909 land leaving it turned on all day long.

Your guy wants to make money off of you. A higher service puts more strain on your system and causes it to break down faster

This is the way. Low Merv and room air purifiers

Look at specs for filters - the thinner the filter, the less surface area in the pleats and the more a higher MERV rating cuts down on airflow.
A 1" MERV 10 filter may starve a system for air, but a 5" MERV 11 filter might have less restriction than a 1" MERV 8.
Also worth comparing between filters, since there can be differences even at the same rating.
Example: was just a Menards and BestAir completely changed the material in their filters - the ones labeled as "new look" have worse specs for filtration and air flow than the old ones.

What's the need for the extra air filtration? I'm trying to find the logic that I may be missing. I go outside every day into unfiltered air. So, why is my house air a bigger problem?
