Like most dishwasher cleaners this is just citric acid in a fancy bottle.

https://www.rbnainfo.com/MSDS/CA/...> <br /> I get much better and more reliable results just using straight citric acid.

You can buy something like this that would cost around 85-90 cents per descaling. Just add about 1/4c to the bottom of the tub and run it. Personally I descale without dishes in it.

That's actually a pretty fair point and technically accurate, though it's missing a bit of nuance. Commercial products like this one often contain surfactants and corrosion inhibitors that help remove grease and protect rubber seals and stainless steel parts. Straight long-term use of citric acid without neutralizing agents might be harsher on aluminum trim or older rubber seals. Also, Finish bottles are pre-measured and designed to release acid at the right temperature. When you pour citric acid powder into the tub, it dissolves all at once, maybe still fine, but less controlled depending on dishwasher specs. Lastly, for a really greasy or smelly dishwasher, Finish may outperform pure acid alone in terms of odor removal and grease breakdown. Citric acid helps, but enzymes or mild detergents in branded cleaners handle greasy residue more effectively.

So throw a detergent tab in there.Many consumer products are just basic chemicals repackaged and upcharged.One of the reasons I stopped using these sorts of canned products is I had issues with the wax plug actually melting and that's with a brand new Bosch machine. No point in a product when it doesn't dispense as intended.

A detergent tab can help with grease, but it won't do the same job as a dedicated cleaner. Tabs aren't formulated to remove mineral scale or clear out detergent residue in spray arms, plumbing channels, and the sump. They're designed for cleaning dishes, not the machine itself. And the wax plug issue you mentioned is a known quirk with some models, but that doesn't really mean the chemistry behind these cleaners is pointless. The sealed bottle format is meant to release the ingredients only at a certain temperature so the acid stays concentrated long enough to break down buildup where regular detergent can't reach. Bulk citric acid works fine for basic descaling, but the commercial cleaners still add surfactants and inhibitors that protect stainless parts and rubber seals during the wash.
