Windows has a built in file compression tool?
Windows has supported the basic features of ZIP for a while, and very recently added RAR and 7z (and maybe more?), but it doesn't support advanced features, and there are many advanced features. It does the job 98% of the time for me. For the other 2% there I use 7zip. I've used other programs in another century (and sometimes WinZip at work).

I had work buy this for me long ago because I can use it to create self-contained software installers for programs that do not have their own. Commercially, WinRAR is targeted to IT folks like me. I work in higher education, and we use a lot of software that doesn't have its own installer. WinRAR does for me what a $10K installshield subscription used to do for a fraction of the cost.

Man, the story of zip's creator, Phil Katz on Wikipedia is a real downer.

I used pkzip back in the DOS days of 1990. Years later, I got a free license for Winzip, and I used it for 10 or 15 years. Finally, when I had a 6 core processor, I downloaded a new license that supported that, and it made a HUGE difference.

Actually back to Win98 days (but I think it was part of the "Plus" addon.). WinXP was first to have it baked in.
Same with me -- Windows compression works fine for most of my needs.

Google rarreg.key and download it (499 byte). Paste the file in the winrar directory. Normally it is in C://Program files/winrar
You'll have lifetime license.

It seems many folks like 7z. However, I found out by accident when my Wifi disconnected in September and 7z will not run without internet connection. My guess they are using tracking location or who know what.

Other info:
7z version 24.0X
Windows11
Sounds like you have some weird/contaminated version of 7zip. The official version has no such limitations, and I use it all the time without an internet connection.

Current version is 25.01 as well... no "X" or anything like that: https://7-zip.org/

My favorite "other" use for 7zip is to use it to pull files out of ISOs or even installer EXEs. I love that it can pull things out like that, without me having to mount the ISO or run the EXE if I don't want to.

I have never paid for it, not on DOS, Windows 3.1 or whatnot when this first came out...
Now we have 7zip...
