The Creality Falcon A1 laser engraver and cutter is currently on sale for $466. If you use the code CFFAM from the Falcon FB group, you can get 10% off for a final of $419.40. Both the gray and white enclosure versions are available for the same price. The 10% off code also works on the bundles.
If you're looking for a laser engraver to make personalized Christmas gifts, like custom wood signs, engraved ornaments, or leather items, the Falcon A1 is a relatively beginner friendly (mostly pre-assembled), fully enclosed laser engraver and cutter. Because it's enclosed, you don't have to worry about eye exposure to the laser. It's FDA Class 1 certified, if that matters for commercial use. The enclosure also helps contain smoke. There's a vent at the back where you can attach a hose to route the smoke out a window or through an air purifier with a smoke filter. It also has a built-in camera on top for aligning the work pieces.
The machine comes mostly assembled, so setup is simple and quick. It includes the free Falcon Design Space software for both Windows and macOS. You can also use LightBurn if you prefer, but Falcon Design Space is free and works fine for most users.
The Falcon A1 uses a 10-watt diode laser. It does not support the optional 2-watt infrared module that the A1 Pro version does, and the Pro also adds Wi-Fi and a display screen that the regular A1 does not have.
It can work with materials like wood, acrylic (that's not completely clear), cardboard, leather, stainless steel (for engraving), glass (coating required for engraving), slate etc. The engraving area is 305 x 381 mm, which is approximately 12 x 15 inches.
It uses a CoreXY motion system for faster movement, known from 3D printers, and can reach speeds up to 600 mm/s. The laser spot size is 0.06x0.08 mm which is relatively fine, higher power lasers usually have bigger laser spot sizes. While more power helps with cutting, the smaller spot size helps with more detailed engraving. The air assist pump is included with the laser, it helps for cleaner cuts.
The A1 supports the rotary roller kit for round objects like tumblers, for which you have to remove the bottom panel to have enough clearance to use it.
