Useful for some types of cuts on a project like that, but I'd sooner recommend a miter saw with slide, circular saw, or even a table saw. Primary reason is those are better at making perfect clean cuts (with the right blade of course) than this will be. I personally use a jig saw for custom non straight (scroll) cuts. You can make a straight cut with a jig saw, but you'll want use some kind of guide. It's hard to get a clean cut though with a jig saw, especially with any veneered plywood.

If you're beginning wood projects for the first time, non straight cuts will not only make your result look horrible, but will also not join well. Depending on your exact project, being off by a 1/16th of an inch can ruin your work.

My dad owns his own construction company and over the past couple of years has transitioned more into custom cabinetry. For the kind of work you're looking at doing I'd recommend a table saw and miter box.

I am fully bought into the Dewalt cordless tools line with absolutely no complaints, but am missing this tool from my collection. I just wanted to comment that if you need batteries with the tool, Home Depot has a 2 battery bundle for $199 which includes a 5.0 Ah and 2.0 Ah battery with charger (these are not XR batteries, but still a great bundle price) or Toolup.com (which is an authorized Dewalt online retailer) also has a 2 battery bundle for $199 which includes two 4.0 Ah XR batteries but no charger included.

I have a corded model...for as much as I use it, I don't think I can justify purchasing it just to have a cordless model...for example, it's probably not a tool I would use on a ladder. I want it but for over $100 I would rather buy another cordless tool that I don't have, but one that I would use from a ladder or one that would be a better mobile tool (construction site without utility power).
