The RG DS stands out as a low cost dual screen handheld aimed at DS emulation, with native Wi Fi and screens that should beat original DS panels. The chipset is widely framed as enough for the full DS library and lighter systems like N64, PS1, and lightweight PSP, while the second screen makes it feel unique for under $100. The main limitation is performance, since 3DS support is expected to be limited to very light games at best, and heavier titles like Fire Emblem Awakening are out of reach. It looks like a niche pick for DS fans who can live without serious 3DS power.
DS fans who want a modern dual-screen handheld, because it should run the full DS library and has better screens than the original DS.
Buyers who want to skip waiting for independent performance reviews, because the specs leave enough uncertainty that some are holding off until verified testing appears.
It is not powerful enough for heavier 3DS games like Fire Emblem Awakening. It may handle only very light 3DS titles, and the smaller top screen is another practical limitation for 3DS play.
Its main value is being a DS-style dual-screen handheld with native Wi‑Fi at under $100. The tradeoff is a lackluster chipset, so it is best viewed as a DS-focused device rather than a high-performance emulator.
DS emulation is effectively limited to DraStic because the chip is not strong enough to run melonDS reasonably. That matters if you want features tied to other emulators, such as RetroAchievements.
Amen, the hate makes no sense...especially because the same people who expect high end 3DS performance also still want dual touch screens AND sub $100 prices. Did they also complain when Anbernic came out with the GBA targeted RG34XX, it didn't play PS3, and it wasn't 4WD?
First time I've seen one of these cheap Anbernic handhelds (for less than $100) feature native WiFi. I'm on the fence a/b buying one of these since I'm apprehensive a/b its performance due to its specs so I'm holding off till there are verifiable independent reviews available.

Bro most of their lineup sits in the $50-60 range and has for for a long time. I sell these locally as a side hussle on marketplace, I own 2 dozen Anbernics and dozens of other models. My advice, if you just want something cheap to play retro games, grab a $25 R36S, if you want a bigger 4" 1:1 screen, the R36S Ultra is pretty decent for $40-$45. If you wanna just play DS games, N64, PS1, lightweight PSP games, and dreamcast along with the entire 8-16 bit libraries the DS is a pretty cool option. But ya those R36S for $25-$30 with 21000 games already loaded on the 128GB one they're a steal.
This really isn't a bad price for what you're getting, you're getting that second screen for DS games and it's got a rk3368 which is basically a binned RK3356 overclocked to 2ghz from 1.8ghz, so it'll run N64 pretty well and lightweight PSP. I'm not going to buy it because I have a DNA Duo ordered for my Ayaneo Pocket EVO, it's a second screen that attaches to your device. It's OLED too. If you wanna spend some money there are some really powerful handhelds. But If I was a DS fan I would just wait until they release a mid-tier model of this. My guess is there will be a Dimensity 8300 version of this coming out evntually which will be able to play 3ds and even ps2 and wii and stuff. It'll prolly sit around $200-$250. The Ayn Thor looks good and sports a snapdragon 8 gen 2 I think, that thing can even play switch games too but it's like $350 or something, maybe more. That's the move though if you want to play it all..

With Anbernic specifically there's stuff like the 40xx or the cubexx or the 35xx pro that are below $100 and currently available below $50 that have wifi without needing a dongle and you can use retroachivements
There's also stuff like the TrimUI Smart Pro in that $50 neighborhood with wifi on it
As far as the RGDS since the chip isn't powerful enough to run MelonDS reasonably you're stuck with Drastic so things like no retroachivements for people who care about that kind of thing
RetroGameCorps put out a video discussing some thoughts about it and using another device with a similar chip to estimate how it might do

Not to insult your intelligence, but your comment(s) comes across as if I don't own any of the devices you just mentioned when all I said was and I paraphrase: "I was unaware that sub-$100 handhelds contained any WiFi connectivity and that I'm holding off from buying the Anbernic RG DS till I see 3rd party independent reviews." I'm well informed a/b the handheld emulation scene and I own quite a few of them, more than I can keep up w/. Hell, 3x of them remain unused and brand new in their boxes, and I got 2x R36S's arriving on their way from AliExpress which I'll be giving as gifts for family. Forgive me for not allowing my life to revolve around cheap Chinese handhelds. Tell me something that I don't already know...

Since I mentioned a few of the devices that do have what you mentioned as being unaware of having a feature within a certain price range I guess I did tell you something you don't already know.
I am not sure why you felt the need to include me in your crosshairs when I was just putting info out there in good faith publicly that might be helpful in general instead of just you specifically with the latter half including the video, sometimes others like to be as informed as they can about something before buying a bunch that they keep brand new but at least this gave you an excuse to unbox them so I consider that a win. One step closer to learning some features. Even if the pictured ones aren't in the price neighborhood you mentioned being unaware of a feature of, since you commented being unaware without knowing maybe you aren't exactly keeping up with those features of devices you don't use either
I hope you enjoy your stockpile of cheap Chinese handhelds that your life doesn't revolve around

First I'm hearing of this device. Looked up a speculation review and based on the chip they're putting on it sounds like it'll cap at Ds games for playability so 3ds may be out of the question.
You won't expect a high powered device to be under $100. What makes this unique is being the first DS clone compared to originals that are showing age now.
For those who does not want to dive into all the Chinese retro consoles: YES, it should run all DS library with that weak processor. NO, it is not powerful enough to run 3DS games. Screens will be better than original DS screens.
Want to run all 3DS library - google Ayn Thor, even Lite version will deliver. Or wait for second iteration of RG DS.
Do you have a recommendation for a handheld that can run 3DS games?

Glad I was smart enough to hold off from preordering this device based on Retro Game Corps' impressions video[youtube.com]. And fark whoever disliked my original comment you POS's, lol.

Yes, it should run the full DS library. The weaker processor is still considered sufficient for DS, but not for 3DS.
