The pre workouts have some other muscle stimulants while the energy drinks have lots of vitamins at high doses. This C5 is purely for caffeine and taste I think.

They lack the bitterness/bite that you get from ginseng so so they end up tasting like tallboy cans of regular soda. The orange one tastes like sunkist, grape tastes like meijer's old grape soda - both good, but not worth the price really. I did not get any stimulant effect or the "zaps" people have reported from the proprietary energy blend in these things.
Also on a side note, reign kind of sucks too, it's like a chalky version of these as far as taste goes.
C4 Smart Energy has citicoline (Cognizin). Some evidence it improves focus/mental stamina.
C4 Ultimate energy used to have citicoline but it does not anymore. Now has "Teacrine" and "Dynamine." I don't know what the new stuff in it supposedly does.
They all have caffeine. Yellow can has 200mg in a 16oz can, Smart Energy has 200mg in a 12oz can, Ultimate energy has 300mg in a 16oz can.
They all have 6 mcg of vitamin B12 per can.
I really like C4 smart energy more than other energy drinks. Maybe it's the citicoline doing something ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
