The Vitamix 5200 stands out as a powerful, long lasting blender that excels at smoothies, frozen drinks, and even tougher jobs like blending cooked bones for broth or pet food. The tall 64 ounce container is a major draw, especially for those who prefer its narrow shape and vortex for drinks, and the motor has a strong reputation for years of steady use. The main drawbacks are the lack of preset programs, the tall footprint, and the lid design, which can leak if overfilled or run too fast. It feels best suited to buyers who want classic Vitamix power and the included tall container.

Common Questions (5)

  • Yes, the included tall 64-oz classic container is the main reason to choose it for many buyers. The tall jar can help create a stronger vortex for drinks and smoothies, but it also limits future container flexibility compared with newer bases that can use more accessory options.

  • It can handle very tough jobs, including blending boiled turkey and chicken bones into broth for pets and making ice-based smoothies and piña coladas. The motor is described as powerful and long-lasting, though the tall container is especially suited to drinks and liquid-heavy blends.

  • No preset blending programs or self-cleaning mode are included on the 5200. It uses a manual variable-speed control, while the Costco Alta Pro adds smoothie and hot soup programs plus self-cleaning.

  • The 5200 has a 2.0 HP motor, 7-year warranty, no preset programs, and weighs about 10.56 lb; the Alta Pro has a 2.2 HP motor, 10-year warranty, smoothie and hot soup programs, a tamper indicator, and self-cleaning. The 5200 is taller at 20.5 inches, while the Alta Pro is shorter and may fit storage better.

  • The lid mechanism can leak if the container is filled too high or spun too fast, and the center plug can sit loosely. Another report says an older Super 5000 lid fits snugly, so the issue may depend on the lid/container match.

I had a deal alert on this, and have been wanting one for a long time. But since coming across the Tribest Backspin, I'm not sure that in makes sense to buy a non-vacuum blender anymore. Anyone have thoughts on this?

I just want people to know, although this thing is amazing and powerful,I hate the lid mechanism. It's not a solid lid, it's one piece of hard rubber with a little hole in the middle where anotehr plastic nipple goes into. The rubber, being flexible, has no real locking mechanism, besides the these two wings that grip into the edges of the container. But it doesn't have that much holding strength so stuff leaks out if you fill it too high or spin it too fast. The second thing is, there is NO mechanism in the interface between the plastic nipple and the rubber top. It very loosely sits in place, but any small amount of force will knock it off its locked position. It's built for quick easy access to plunge things down when you are working with thicker items. But it's a huge failure point and i've had liquids leak out from this half assed design.

If you use it, you basically have to keep a hand on top to ensure it doesnt explode on you. Horrible flaw on an otherwise perfect blender.

I'm still using my vitamix (5200?) daily that I inherited from my mother. Must be 35 years old and still rocking hard, while my ninja blender collects dust. Sure, id imagine that some things have changed since then, but its performance convinced me to spring for the vitamix immersion blender - easy for soups ('cause we both like soup) - and its excellent as well. Now I'm looking to buy one for my daughter. YMMV, but mine has been outstanding.

Don't have any experience with those but with some things I think simple is better. Just received mine and will put it to use today.

Odd, I have the Super 5000 which was purchased in the 90's and the lid still fits super snug! Are you sure you have the right lid for that container?

I'm looking into this vs the Costco Alta Pro and here's my 2 cents. For me it comes down to the height of the 5200 (20.5") which means it wont fit in my normal storage place. The other factor is the Alta pro has 10 year warranty and 5200 is 7. Since this is replacing a 13 year old blendtec for me this is a more significant factor. Its a good deal though...the tall jar actually helps it blend better than the short one on the alta.

This is the video [youtube.com] that sold me on 5200. If Alta Pro came with tall jar I would have gotten that.

My vitamix jar is starting to look gnarly from the years of use it had. Anyone know when sales are typically had for jars/especially stainless steel ones. The price of on jars almost feels like the same as buying a whole new blender (similar to toner ink and printers)
