As a SteamDeck user who has never played the FF games, where should I start for the best first experience? I'm guessing Remake + Rebirth? Thanks for your help!!!

Depends on what you're looking for. Classic turn based JRPG would be all of the ones from x and down. 12 is not so turn based but not full action, and then it gets into more action RPGs the higher you go, including remake/rebirth. They all have their own stories, some better than others, but overall all are decent with stories like 4 and 6 being exceptional IMO. Even X is a pretty good story

Start anywhere you like. The games are standalone with very few exceptions like Crisis Core, the VII remake, and Lightening Returns above. If you stick to the main numbers releases, you'll have a starting point of an original story as none of them are connected in any way, regardless of spinoffs or sequels/prequels they may have to play after. Check the stories and gameplay on the main numbered releases and if you see something that interests you, get it. They are so varied that without knowing your interest, it's hard to recommend one. Most are turn-based rpgs of sorts except for 15, 16, Type-0 (spinoff of 13, kind of), the VII remake titles, and Strangers of Paradise. World of Final Fantasy is like a remix involving characters from all the mainline series at the time, so I would avoid that as a first.

Just stick to I-XVI as a starting point and pick one, then the next, or a spinoff, prequel, or sequel if the one you picked has them, and you'll be fine.

Steam shows mostly favorable reviews when sorting by recent. Did they fix it since you last checked?
