Been monitoring LAX - Tokyo flights for early next year and prices are the same so there really isn't a sale for LAX.

My experience with ZipAir:
+ Direct to Japan/non-stop flights available
+ Great service from Airline staff
+ Very reasonable prices for food on board flights
+ Free WiFi on board
+ Free in flight entertainment on your mobile device via WiFi
+ Planes are new and clean
+ Can almost fully stand up in front of your seat as overhead bins are higher up
- Strict with luggage weight
- Seats felt slightly narrower than I'm used to and leg space also felt less than I'm used to (could just me or not being used to such long flights)

Tips:
• Fly there with as little as possible in your carry on
• If purchasing lots of items in Japan, I see it as having 4 options, depending on the weight of your checked in luggage:
1. MAX total luggage weight of 33lbs: $0-38 there + $35 back = $73 total
2. Max total luggage weight of 81lbs (15lbs carry on + 66lbs check in): $85 there + $75 back = $160
3. Max total luggage weight 15lbs to Japan + max 81lbs back: buy $50-75 luggage in Japan + $75 check in back = $125-150

I ended up buying a $90 large luggage at Don Quiote, but soon regretted it as I saw random vendors along the streets of Kyoto selling the same sized luggage for $50-75. Will be flying ZipAir again. Just expect to pay for checked luggage and it doesn't hurt so bad. It's STILL cheaper to fly ZipAir for me than to fly another airline that includes free checked luggage + ZipAir flies non-stop to Japan.

Those are good prices for March, during Spring Break and cherry blossom time, but not so special prices during January and February when the plane tickets to Japan are the cheapest.

Good price but they will for sure weigh your carryon to see if its over 7kg and charge like $80 each flight leg. I have done 60 flights with my 40 liter osprey bag and the only times I got overweight penalties was twice with Zipair. They weigh every bag at the gate during boarding and not just at the check in counters or if its obviously oversized like most airlines.

Zipair makes a lot of sense if you have kids under 7 which are half the price. At least I didn't know this prior to my last trip with them and was amazed.

It's cheaper on the way back since they charge you in JPY, so it's about $72 for a checked bag on the return flight.

Also, even with the cost of checked luggage, it's still cheaper than other airlines ticket prices. Plus ZipAir flies direct vs 1-2 stops on most other airlines.

Have only had one trip on zip, it made sense since both kids were little so they flew for practically free. The vibe is definitely "young backpacker" so our flight was quite rowdy. We travel with big luggages so I ended up not saving too much vs ANA and JAL for the same time frames.

I'd prefer to pay a little bit more for those airlines and for the possibility of landing in HND instead of NRT. Drive to and from is brutal with the jet lag.

This is why you don't check in when leaving. Since it's winter, you layer up so your carry on is light. You bring old clothing that you don't want so you can wear and leave the clothes there or you can buy the clothing there. You buy goodies and check the bag on the home trip. Several members said Ginza Karen sells cheap durable bags and luggage.

I couldn't stand up in front of my seat-- the overhead bins didn't seem significantly higher up than most modern planes. They are strict with luggage weight but what airline isn't in 2025.
