This is a very inexpensive Nas and for some people it can be a very good deal. But be aware of its limitations, and even though the model 2800 is about $100 more, it is night and day better if you intend to try to run any containers or utilize functionality beyond the most basic Network storage. This 2300 unit does not support docker containers (which is significant because ugreen has a decent operating system but nowhere near the maturity and app catalog of a Synology). This unit has four GB of RAM which is not upgradable, and an arm CPU which is fine for basic functions but nowhere near the capability of the n100 in the model 2800 and other units. When I see posts about this Nas in some of the forums I visit, as well as Reddit, I frequently see where people have bought this based in part on what they've heard about how powerful ugreen Nas units are and all the things you can do with them, and they get this model and are quite disappointed that it is nothing like their expectations. But if you need simply network storage space with very basic functionality, this is an inexpensive way to set it up and it has decent build quality and low power usage.

I'd want to use this as an off-site back-up at my parent's house for my unraid server I'm setting up at home.

I'm planning to use Veeam at home, do you know if this is capable of using veeam?

I don't know anything about veeam. You can set up remote access (if you aren't familiar, make sure you research how to make sure your nas and network are secure if you enable remote access. Ugreen's OS does allow you to enable multi-factor authentication. I use tailscale to access remotely, and it is very popular for this.

Veeam requires a windows host to run the backup application. You can use this as a storage target if you want, though.

What other brands are recommended? I wanted to get an aoostar but the n100 model I wanted suddenly became discontinued. 2 bay is fine with RAID 1 is fine.

I wanted something along those lines. I just pulled the trigger on the UGREEN DXP2800 at $280. I was also looking at the Terramaster F2-425 which is $200 now (but Prime only on Amazon).

Deciding points for me were the better CPU, more RAM, and m.2 slots. RAM is stupid expensive right now so I wanted something I don't have to upgrade. I also wanted an SSD slot to install the OS on (instead of the USB flash drive the F2 uses).

Aoostar doesn't seem to have their equivalent in the 2-bay line anymore. They look to be switching to AMD, in their R7. And it's a bit pricier (barebones, for what I just paid). You can get an N150 in their four bay model.

The DH2300 in this thread was never really in contention for me, I wanted x86 instead of ARM - for lots more software compatibility.

ds2800 (n100 cpu, 8gb ram upgradable) much better than dh2300 (arm cpu, 4gb ram not upgradable), much better than 223j (weakest arm cpu, 1gb ram).
Synology DSM is the best nas operating system. Ugreen UGOS is rather easy to use, continues to improve.
I would not get the Synology 223j (or any j series Synology.)

Research xpenology. I have heard rumors that you can install Synology DSM on the 2800 and it works perfectly, and you have the best of both worlds. Of course, those are only rumors and I would never try that myself. Wink
