They will aggressively remotely brick the console for online AND offline use if there's any unauthorized modifications or if the console plays a genuine cartridge that was "ripped" to make a "backup". You do not actually own the console -- you're paying for a license to use the console. And that license can be revoked for nearly any number of reasons.
These brickings may not be instantaneous either. News story broke that some child bought a genuine Switch 2 cartridge from a TheFaceBook "Marketplace", and a few days after playing it, their entire console was bricked. Turns out, the previous owner bought the cart, ripped it, and quickly resold it. It was a hassle showing Nintendo all the "instant messages" with TheFaceBook as a form of evidence, begging them to reinstate the console.
Remember, the reason they call it the "switch" is because they can switch it off whenever they like.
