The Uniden R8 is a long range radar and laser detector that stands out for strong range, fewer false alerts, and useful GPS based muting and app control. The front mute button, wireless updates, and optional phone pairing add convenience, and the resale price is described as a solid deal for a model that holds value well. The main caution is Amazon resale condition and warranty, since Like New units carry no warranty and used detectors can be affected by heat or prior handling. A practical pick if you want premium detection without paying full retail.

Common Questions (5)

  • It can arrive like new in original packaging and work normally, which is why some buyers call it a great deal. There is also a reported risk with used detectors: heat exposure and prior handling can affect reliability, and one prior Amazon resale R7 began smoking during a USB update.

  • Yes. Waze and Highway Radar are treated as complementary tools rather than replacements, and the R8 can pair with Highway Radar for phone-based control and settings changes. Waze is especially useful on highways and where many drivers are reporting hazards, but it does not replace a detector.

  • The R8W is the model mentioned for WiFi updates and laser-jammer support, while the standard R8 was initially said not to include that support. Another comment says Uniden later backtracked and will add laser-jammer support, so the feature status appears to have changed.

  • The R8 is described as having slightly better range and fewer false alerts than the R7, while functionally being very similar. The main practical upgrades mentioned are the front mute button and phone/app control for settings, with the app being optional for many users.

  • New Uniden purchases have a 1-year warranty, but Like New Amazon Resale units carry no warranty. Uniden also reportedly offers a flat $99 repair fee for the R8 if it is out of warranty.

For those asking the R8 has slightly better range than the R7 and in my experience fewer false alerts.

Being able to pair with Highway Radar is a nice feature, but not really a game changer since you can use highway radar as a standalone app. You can still combine it with the R7 and the only thing you're really missing is that with the R8 paired to your phone you can control the radar detector and make changes to settings via phone.

Whichever you choose, check out the recommended settings for your geographical location from vortex radar. It will significantly reduce false alerts.

Cobra 700i is only $147 using the same 30% off deal and 2% discount for prime day delivery. It's honestly good enough if you are a responsible driver who is not going 20+ mph over the speed limit like a lunatic. I go a nice comfortable 10mph over and use waze as well

If you already have an r7, is it worth the upgrade? I'm reading that it's really not online
I'm wondering the same thing. It's very tempting to have app capabilities to tweak the settings.

I have been extremely happy with ValentineOne for decades now.
I still have the Valentine One and it picks up too many false signals, to the point where I just start ignoring it.
My R7 picks very few false negatives and when it does I can mute it and it saves it in the memory and uses gps to automatically mute it when I go by it again.

Can we trust "Used - Like New"?
Not at all. Like New can be broken garbage, worse grades can be like new.

Dammit I'm so dumb. I just bought one for $550 on eBay. I should've known I could expect some better prices soon, with black Friday coming up

If you have a positive hit for laser, it is very likely they clocked your speed. Whether or not they have a clear idea it's you isn't always the case in heavy, multi-lane traffic. They will often then pace you to confirm it was you. If you slow down with being alerted, you might avoid a ticket. Again, having your speed on the laser doesn't always mean they can 100% say you were the vehicle they had locked onto. All that said, assume you are getting a ticket when the laser goes off and slow down and prepare for the stop.
Laser use is very state by state dependent. Some states don't use X-band. Some states use all bands and all systems and lots of red-light cameras and photo radar. The addition of GPS to these have helped mitigate those dangers along with Waze. Lots of tools to help keep you informed.
Most of the cars that have automatic cruse control distance keeping use radar. That was a big problem for the radar detectors when they started, but most of the false signals due to those systems have been filtered out by good DSP. Laser doesn't appear to be as big of a problem, not that it doesn't happen.
Good info. Thanks. I also remember reading the the laser has to hit a flat surface, so they usually aim for the plate. Supposedly having a curved clear license plate cover helps, but unsure how true that is.

You know what's free? Not speeding.
Are you one of those driving under speed limit on the far left lane? I ran into a lot of those on the freeway. They also ignored my headlight flashing. They drive 60mph on a 70mph speed limit.
