The Insta360 X4 is a 360 action camera that stands out for capturing everything and letting you reframe the shot after recording, which makes it especially useful for sports, coaching, and other set it and forget it setups. It shines when the camera is placed near the middle of the action, and overheating has not been an issue even at max settings during summer hikes. The main tradeoff is that the ultra wide footage can look blurry when zoomed in, especially from farther away, and the X4 has a fixed lens that is harder to replace than the X5. At $300, it lands near past bundle pricing, though some earlier bundles included extras like an SD card and battery.
Filmmakers capturing moving subjects, because you can reframe the footage after recording to choose the angle later.
It works best when placed near the middle of the action; from the sidelines or back it can be too wide and less useful. For coaching or field coverage, it helps to mount it high enough that people do not block the view, then reframe the footage afterward.
Yes, but the 1-year cloud storage offer may require chatting with an agent during checkout. The invoice can show the free gift as "Insta360 +200GB Annual" at $0.
The X4 captures a full 360° scene so you can move the view around after recording and choose what to show later. That makes it useful when you want to capture everything first and decide the framing afterward.
The X5 has replaceable lenses, while the X4 has a fixed lens that cannot be changed without disassembling the camera. That matters most if the camera may drop or the lens may get damaged.
It can run without overheating in normal summer use, even at max settings, and the optional heat cage was not needed in that case. Very hot sunny conditions may still cause overheating for some users.
Anyone who has used this and the X5, is it worth upgrading to the X5 for the replacement lens and better low light?
Id say it would depend on ur use. If your using it attached to a bike or somewhere u think it might drop and damage lens then the x5 has easy lens change. X4 has fixed lens that cant be changed without breaking internals down. X5 easy lens changing is biggest difference I see for average user

Yeah, it would be for a motorcycle. Thanks for the input.
This will likely be too wide for your use case vs just using a standard go pro (or even an iPhone) with a higher resolution.
This will get everything, but look pretty bad when zoomed in. It's meant for people to hold close to their subjects. I ski with my One R 360 lense, and once my partner is more than 10 feet away, and I zoom in, you notice the blurriness.
Agreed. Wide doesn't work well with sports from the sidelines and back. On the field in the middle of the action is where it shines.
Do these have issues with overheating like go pros tend to have if you arent moving around much while recording?
They have the little cage supposedly to help a little with heat but i never used it and haven't run into any issues with overheating at all, even at max settings. I record summer hikes in upstate ny. I think this would mostly be an issue for recording on very hot days in the sun though because it does happen to some people.
Insta360 website with email subscription and coupon code. I just got an X3 for $229.99, including a tripod, case, and 1 year of cloud storage, totaling $254 including tax and free shipping. FYI, the coupon code applies after payment under "review order." Check Akaso on Amazon for $169.99 if you're on a budget.

Thanks for sharing this, I am only getting 6 months of cloud storage when I try to replicate it. Did you have to do anything extra to get 1 year?
The Costco X5 bundle is much better and it comes with an extra battery and a selfie stick. Plus they will probably drop the price another $50 in January:
Larger sensor size
New Chip set
Replaceable lenses
Longer battery life

The camera lets you move and reframe captured 360 footage after recording to see everything.
The 360 wide-angle view works best when the camera sits near the middle of the action.
The fixed-lens X4 can still be useful for sideline coaching because you can reorient and zoom after the fact.
The deal price matches a prior Costco bundle value that included an SD card and extra battery.
The 360 footage can look blurry when zoomed in, especially when subjects are more than about 10 feet away.
The wide-angle 360 view can look poor for sports when shooting from the sidelines or from behind the action.
The X4 fixed lens cannot be changed without disassembling internals, which can matter if the lens gets damaged.
The Insta360 coupon workflow for extended cloud storage may require chatting with an agent to receive the full year.

Does the light handling ability work for that application?
Any recommendations for a camera that works well in that environment?
