The Insta360 X4 is a 360 action camera that stands out for capturing everything and letting you reframe the shot after recording, which makes it especially useful for sports, coaching, and other set it and forget it setups. It shines when the camera is placed near the middle of the action, and overheating has not been an issue even at max settings during summer hikes. The main tradeoff is that the ultra wide footage can look blurry when zoomed in, especially from farther away, and the X4 has a fixed lens that is harder to replace than the X5. At $300, it lands near past bundle pricing, though some earlier bundles included extras like an SD card and battery.
Filmmakers capturing moving subjects, because you can reframe the footage after recording to choose the angle later.
It works best when placed near the middle of the action; from the sidelines or back it can be too wide and less useful. For coaching or field coverage, it helps to mount it high enough that people do not block the view, then reframe the footage afterward.
Yes, but the 1-year cloud storage offer may require chatting with an agent during checkout. The invoice can show the free gift as "Insta360 +200GB Annual" at $0.
The X4 captures a full 360° scene so you can move the view around after recording and choose what to show later. That makes it useful when you want to capture everything first and decide the framing afterward.
The X5 has replaceable lenses, while the X4 has a fixed lens that cannot be changed without disassembling the camera. That matters most if the camera may drop or the lens may get damaged.
It can run without overheating in normal summer use, even at max settings, and the optional heat cage was not needed in that case. Very hot sunny conditions may still cause overheating for some users.
Anyone who has used this and the X5, is it worth upgrading to the X5 for the replacement lens and better low light?
I can only speak to the X5 low light, it's not even in the ballpark of an iPhone on low light and I recall hearing the X5 was an improvement on low light so if you're looking for more light performance… definitely consider the X5 first but don't expect amazing low light. If you can find a deal and can deal with fixed POV, the new insta360 nano ultra might be for you since it's the same sized sensor as the X5 and has the PureView night software tech.
Is something like this good for recording a flag football game from the sidelines? For example, I'd like to toss something on a tall tripod that can capture the game without needing to move it, wide angle. Mainly to help the team review and study. Thanks
I use it for a similar use case coaching on the sideline with a backpack clip mount. While you can do the wide angle great, you're better off with an iPhone for the use case you specifically mentioned (sideline/wide angle). The advantage of the X5 for me is being able to reorient the video after the fact. So for a football game you can zoom into one side of the field instead of having dead space on one side of your wide angle shot. You also wouldn't need to put up too high, just high enough so no one walks in front of it to block it. For sidelines if you're coaching it's pretty awesome since it can 'zoom' to a specific spot around it without you having to worry about angles or mounting it right. The 4K quality or lowlight is nowhere near an iPhone pro, but for the abilities of capturing everything and you can point and choose where to view, it's unrivaled by a standard (non 360) cam, I'm using it to coach and video the occasional highlight and don't need to capture everyone's smiles/facial expressions so it works well.

The iPhone is great, especially the last two that have came out. I'm waiting the "set it and forget it" so it can just capture the entire field. Seeing both offense/defense plays is helpful. I don't mind going 360, but if something like the Ace Pro 2 or a GoPro is better suited, I'm fine with that. Like you said being able to determine who is who for plays, but not needing to get smiles such. Thanks
The Costco X5 bundle is much better and it comes with an extra battery and a selfie stick. Plus they will probably drop the price another $50 in January:
Larger sensor size
New Chip set
Replaceable lenses
Longer battery life
Yeah, i'm looking at costco right now and they still have the bundle for the X5 and price is valid through 1/2/26
Insta360 X5 - 8K 360° Action Camera Bundle
$469.99
Includes:
-Insta360 x5 Action Camera
-2 Total Batteries
-114cm Selfie Stick
-Lens Cap
-256GB Micro SD Card
seems like a good deal because of all the extras in the bundle. but I guess if you're really trying to save money, maybe just buy the x5 standalone or I guess the x4 for even less

The camera lets you move and reframe captured 360 footage after recording to see everything.
The 360 wide-angle view works best when the camera sits near the middle of the action.
The fixed-lens X4 can still be useful for sideline coaching because you can reorient and zoom after the fact.
The deal price matches a prior Costco bundle value that included an SD card and extra battery.
The 360 footage can look blurry when zoomed in, especially when subjects are more than about 10 feet away.
The wide-angle 360 view can look poor for sports when shooting from the sidelines or from behind the action.
The X4 fixed lens cannot be changed without disassembling internals, which can matter if the lens gets damaged.
The Insta360 coupon workflow for extended cloud storage may require chatting with an agent to receive the full year.
