So to play this, does each person hold on to one joycon? I see something about using your phone as a camera? Can someone explain how it all works?

It only tracks the movement of the one controller you're holding. It's not full body tracking like Dance Central.

Is the Just Dance+ membership necessary? I have an older version of Just Dance and it kept pestering me to sign up. Also had many songs locked for members only.

It's better to use a joycon, but you can hold a phone instead (using the phone's gyro sensors and connecting over WiFi) in a pinch if you don't have enough joycons for everyone.

The songs for Just Dance 2026 (and 2025, and a few songs on Plus) are compatible with using the phone as a camera, but the tracking isn't very good.

Without the Plus subscription, you get the 30-40 new songs for the specific game(s) you purchase (installed to local storage). With the subscription, you get access to the back catalog of about 500 songs (streamed over the internet). The UI does push Plus hard, unfortunately.
