Bold pricing considering they enter space with established players like Synology or Qnap

My UGREEN has been flawless since the Kickstarter (running unRAID). I don't think this particular model is worth this price, however (I don't think most of them are worth the non-Kickstarter prices). Also, pay attention to the Slickdeals price tracking history that shows the machine at $520 over the past few months. This $560 price is not a discount, it's a price increase.

Im interested in your thoughts about this particular model not being worth the price , because I thought this was one of the better options for an all-in-one NAS device with 4-bay and decent performance

Hard price to swallow when the Terramaster F4-424 Max is 30% off.. I'm really torn between these two

Isn't Synology doing silly stuff like limiting the kinds of HDDs you can put into their devices?

No clue.. I haven't used either yet. But what I do see is that TOS 6 (terramaster's latest OS) seems to be reviewed very favorably compared to the older one. Also, the fact that you could install your own OS of choice on either of these

Totally agree that it's overpriced. The same model is for sale at half of the price in China. If anything, the 2 bay one would be the best value

It is one of the better options right now. My baseline is skewed though with the Kickstarter prices, which are not remotely available now.

While I didn't have too many concerns with the OS for basic NAS management, I don't know how secure it is and how long UGREEN will update it. I think using a third party OS is the best approach for long-term support and security issues. In that case, people might consider building something themselves. I know that's not for everyone, but it's an option for some people.

In that case, it's possible to build something more powerful for about the same price. The one challenge is the market for PC components is generally overpriced right now, especially for lower-end ones (e.g., Intel i3-12100 are about $130-$140, which is high given their age). Even so, it's possible to build something that's more powerful for about the same price or somewhat higher if you want more features and even more performance.

Here's an option with an 8 bay case that isn't huge (the motherboard in the list has 6 x SATA 6Gb/s ports). For some reason PCPartPicker isn't showing all prices accurately so I've adjusted the CPU price in this list (I haven't checked all the others). That motherboard has a 2.5 gbps ethernet port instead of 10 gbps, but you can add a Syba card one for about $58 if desired. Again, I know building isn't for everyone but even with the tough component market right now you can put together a 6-8 bay system for about the same price. If building is not possible, then this DXP4800 Plus is about as good of an option as available now for a semi-powerful 4 bay system.

The included CPU cooler will work well enough for a NAS.

Part List: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/NJ6Ynp
CPU: Intel Core i3-12100 3.3 GHz Quad-Core Processor ($136.49 @ Amazon)

Memory: Crucial CT8G4DFD8213 8 GB (1 x 8 GB) DDR4-2133 CL15 Memory ($30.00 @ Amazon)
Storage: Transcend 110S 128 GB M.2-2280 PCIe 3.0 X4 NVME Solid State Drive ($23.99 @ Amazon)

Power Supply: FSP Group Dagger Pro 650 W 80+ Gold Certified Fully Modular SFX Power Supply ($122.49 @ Amazon)

Same boat. I will probably load a 3rd party OS so my main decision point is strictly hardware related.

What has me leaning toward UGREEN over QNAP and Terra is the power consumption. The 2-bay UGREEN runs at 5W when idle. Terra is 11W and QNAP is 18W. These will be on 24/7 and 18W is more than a refrigerator.

Am I missing something?
