Just set up one today, app is near instantaneous for me. Maybe do a speed test and check for latency from your ISP or possibly your home network.

Does anyone know if these are good for actual lamp purposes (lighting up a room to read something) or are they only for ambience and "coolness" factors?

I'd use it for accent lighting, rather than the primary source.

Got one to give more light into a corner and it does a decent job, but wouldn't mind it being brighter sometimes. And it's not as tall as I thought it looked...guess should really look at the dimensions. For $60 you'll probably find it not worth it cause it won't light up a room.

I would say no, it doesn't put out.useful light for reading or doing anything. I got two to light up a room and it sucks. It's cool, but it's not a "lamp". It's a RGB glow stick on a base.

I think ff the latency of your ISP is any part of the equation for turning on a light in front of you via the app, the advice to get the one with a remote still stands.

I've been wanting something like this for years, but I'm too much of a cheapskate to pull the trigger...so I made my own.
Buy any cheap corner lamp for $14 (Walmart: Mainstays 71" Black Floor Lamp, Modern Design), (square shafts work better than round)and thenbuy a cheap, 13' Led Light strip with a remote. (Walmart: TV LED Backlight,9.84ft TV LED Lights for 32-45 Inch,TV Backlight,RGB LED Lights for TV with Remote,Music Sync Bluetooth APP Control TV LED Strip Lights USB Powered for Bedroom) for $7.64. The light strip has adhesive on the back, so just run it up the lamp! Done.
For $20, you then have a lamp for reading, and the options for fun colors with a remote, or to connect to Alexa! It's not the exact same as the one listed, but we're not on "ClassyDeals"...we're on SlickDeals. Smilie

This was my 'lightbulb' moment.

My son has 2 of these in his room and they're great! He usually keeps them dim and on a darker color just for the effect, but they also work for regular lighting

Thank you. This is the only sensible response. I have a $300 router. These guys are blaming my network, internet, my phone (all smart phones in my house I guess lol), everything but the app that I've been using for 3 years. I have 4 of these lamps. They're good for what they do. I just prefer the remotes IF YOU NEED FREQUENT SETTING CHANGES. Please read before blaming my network lol.Google "is govee app slow". Do your homework.

And if your power adapter burns up - You cannot buy a new one. Govee does not sale their power adapters or more importantly - the Bluetooth controller - separately.

I got their string lights and it was enough to string my front AND back porch, but I can only utilize half of the set because they do not sale those independently

Really a dick move on the part of Govee. Makes me not want to buy their cheap shit and appreciate my Phillips Hue accessories and lights.
