UGREEN's 4 bay DH4300 Plus looks like a solid starter NAS for basic backup, phone photo syncing, and Plex, with a decent app and enough room for a simple RAID setup. The main appeal is flexibility if you start with matching drives, since RAID 1 or RAID 5 works best with equal capacities and the usable space lands around 10 terabytes with four 4 terabyte drives. The Rockchip processor is considered too weak for Docker or heavier workloads, and the RAID setup does not offer Synology style mixed capacity convenience. It is a diskless unit, so drives must be supplied separately, making it a better fit for straightforward storage than advanced tinkering.

Common Questions (5)

  • No. RAID capacity is limited by the smallest drive, so mixing different sizes wastes space and can bottleneck performance. It does not have Synology-style SHR flexibility for combining mismatched capacities.

  • The Rockchip CPU is weak for Docker and similar workloads, so it is better suited to basic backup and media serving than demanding containers. It can still handle phone photo backup and Plex.

  • Yes. The firmware has reportedly been updated to accept third-party hard drives again.

  • Diskless means the enclosure does not include any hard drives. You need to supply your own drives before you can use it.

  • Two large drives in RAID 1 or four equal drives in RAID 5 are the practical setups mentioned. Four 4TB drives yield about 10TB usable space, but the initial transfer can take 24+ hours.

Sorry in advance, I'm a noob at this. What does diskless mean if you need to get the hard drives?
That's what it means. It doesn't come with the disks. You will have to furnish those yourself.

What a steal and good timing - I remembered that I have an Amazon Prime Business account that I hardly use. I logged in and looked up this UGREEN NAS and on checkout, it said that if i'm approved for an Amazon Business Credit Card, I'd be eligible for an instant $200 Amazon Gift Card Balance.

I was shortly approved and only spent $173.14 on this NAS! (CA taxes were $33.15). woohoo I love sales lol

eh, not really. Not sure where you're getting your info from to say it's normally $347. I'm using a price tracker program and this is technically the lowest it's been since being listed on Amazon.

In July of this year, this was listed at $429.99 with a drop to $386.99 in August.

There have been two lightning deals for a brand new on September 10 and again on September 30th for $364.98 each time.

Then the price shot back up to $429.99 and it's been like that since October 12th until now, on sale at $339.99 for brand new.

I agree. I've had this in my 'saved for later' cart for at least a month at this price. So I'm not really believing this is a Black Friday deal.

This vs Synology?

Synology has changed their hardware so it will only accept Synology labeled hard drives.

Be extremely wary of NAS devices like this. They're prime targets for ransomware, and most NAS manufacturers have a poor record of providing security updates. It's much safer to build your own NAS running TrueNAS or some other Linux distro. If you must, then configure the NAS to be as secure as possible - disable default accounts, set strong passwords, use 2FA, turn off remote access, turn off/disable all unnecessary services/features, don't install any extra apps/services (they might offer convenient image apps, but don't, vulnerabilities in apps like this have been responsible for ransomware attacks). If you know how, configure your network/firewalls to deny access to everyone except trusted devices, use a VPN interface (wireguard) if possible. If you want or need extra apps/services, run them on a separate server (could just a be a mini PC running Linux, or even a Raspberry Pi), but not on the NAS itself.

It's in the price tracker on this actual page

For the record, the price tracker on this page and the camelcamelcamel price tracking on this item differ greatly. It sounds like CCC's reading is more accurate and this actually is a deal.

I'm looking for a NAS also but I'll very patiently wait until Friday/Monday to make a purchase. Hoping that Synology will surprise us with something nice.

I've long been debating what to do with a NAS. I've stuck with loading up 4-6 HDDs in my desktop and running DrivePool to make a virtual drive, but this results in me needing a colossal tower case and I'd like to have a compact, separate device. Is there a good site or resource for building your own? My biggest reason for avoiding the DIY approach has been keeping the form compact like these devices tend to be. Appreciate any tips you have because I'd much rather roll my own with better specs and move all my docker stuff over from my desktop.

I looked into this and ultimately decided to back off to wait until I upgrade my pc, but you can use a mini itx motherboard and that will let you build something that's much smaller. Jonesbo has nice small cases.
