I started with 2 4TB drives and quickly found out that it works best with 4, and that's a 24+ hour transfer.
So i'd recommend TWO drives of a huge capacity and going raid 1 (meaning one drive is redundant), or getting 4 drives of equal capacity and going raid 5. That's what I'm at and now I'm wishing I had done bigger than 4 4TB drives, but that's a good 10ish TB of usable space.
UGREEN has a great os and app, and that's huge. It backs up all my phone photos and serves as a Plex server. I've used about 5TB so far
In July of this year, this was listed at $429.99 with a drop to $386.99 in August.
There have been two lightning deals for a brand new on September 10 and again on September 30th for $364.98 each time.
Then the price shot back up to $429.99 and it's been like that since October 12th until now, on sale at $339.99 for brand new.

UGREEN's 4 bay DH4300 Plus looks like a solid starter NAS for basic backup, phone photo syncing, and Plex, with a decent app and enough room for a simple RAID setup. The main appeal is flexibility if you start with matching drives, since RAID 1 or RAID 5 works best with equal capacities and the usable space lands around 10 terabytes with four 4 terabyte drives. The Rockchip processor is considered too weak for Docker or heavier workloads, and the RAID setup does not offer Synology style mixed capacity convenience. It is a diskless unit, so drives must be supplied separately, making it a better fit for straightforward storage than advanced tinkering.
The NAS can serve as a starter device when paired with two large drives in RAID1 or four equal drives in RAID5.
The UGREEN OS and app can support phone photo backup and Plex serving for media access.
The device can accept third-party hard drives again after firmware updates.
Checkout can apply an instant $200 Amazon Gift Card balance when using an approved Amazon Business Credit Card with Prime Business.
The RAID setup can limit usable storage to the smallest drive capacity and can waste space when mixing different-sized drives.
The array performance can bottleneck on the slowest or smallest drive when drives differ in speed or performance.
The Rockchip CPU may not run Docker workloads well, which can limit container-based use cases.
NAS devices can be high-value ransomware targets, and poor security-update practices can increase risk without careful hardening.

I agree. I've had this in my 'saved for later' cart for at least a month at this price. So I'm not really believing this is a Black Friday deal.
Synology has changed their hardware so it will only accept Synology labeled hard drives.

eh, not really. Not sure where you're getting your info from to say it's normally $347. I'm using a price tracker program and this is technically the lowest it's been since being listed on Amazon.

I'm looking for a NAS also but I'll very patiently wait until Friday/Monday to make a purchase. Hoping that Synology will surprise us with something nice.
