I opted for the Android ones even though they are $8 more. Android has 75% of the cell market, so my theory is more mobiles to bounce off of. I'm getting them to put on my dogs' collars. Has anyone used Air Tags or Android version with their pets?

I have heard that Android ones aren't effective because Google has blocked the tracking by default and each Android user has to enable it manually.
I looked at the reviews of several different brands and most were very good. Any issues were due to quality or battery life, not by being blocked. I ordered some and have until Jan 31 to return, so it's worth checking out.
I do have an iPad, but almost never use it so I chose the Android ones since I have a Samsung phone.

This isnt Google one. You heard that right... Samsung tracker doesn't work with Google tracker nor Google service, and vise versa. Further segment the market.
You can side-load the Samsung SmartThings app to non Samsung android phones to make it work and track these trackers.
Its not as good as having a Samsung device with the SmartThings app but it works but you have to set up the app(s) with multiple steps.
