Why can't we get an LG OLED 42" for cheap prices like this? I need a gaming monitor in the 40" - 42" range.

After weeks of research this is probably your best value bet if you need something 50 inches or less. The mini led Hisense QD7QF and TCL Qm5k are good options if $550 is still too much, but they lack the features and reliability of this LG oled.
It's a shame the better mini led tvs aren't available in smaller sizes but I guess it gives me a valid excuse to splurge on oled.

Incredible TV. I've had one for about 2 weeks now and I love it. Gaming on it is nothing shy of awesome. Highly recommend if you want to get a great OLED without breaking the bank

Yeah it seems like they know this and keep the 42 OLED near 900. I agree, the 48 is too big (I bought it anyway).

$400 is a lot of difference. If you can control the amount of direct and indirect light in the room that the TV will be in the B5 will do fine. I have a small 13' x 14' office with wood blinds that can really keep the light out. I'm thinking of this tv to replace my 7 year old 1080p 42" Samsung. Since Best Buy accepts PayPal that 20% rewards credit for using pay in 4 sounds inticing.(no interest four payment plan promo)

The key to making 48" work as a computer display is using it as secondary (if you have room for it). This allows you to set it further back and is even better than 42" when you're actually gaming or watching media.

Would the B5 work well as a monitor? Could it sustain ~ 300 nits for regular desktop use? How many years would it take for burn in to occur if you had a browser window in the same place for 12 hours a day or a permanent task bar?

I can't speak to this one, but I've used a 48" LG B4 as my sole computer monitor at work for CAD for about a year. No signs of burn in while using it 5-6 times a week at 10-16 hours a day solely as a computer monitor.

I'm assuming the B5 does this too but I can't verify as I don't own one, LG does pixel shifting while using it that helps (can be disorienting at first), and then when turning the TV off the TV does an automatic screen cleaning.

As an aside, the 48" at two feet from me is perfect. It's like having (4) 24" monitors tiled together. This is absolutely perfect for me. I don't get why people feel the need to sit further back, but that's just me. I use it without scaling.

I love my b4 as a computer monitor, was $500 earlier this year.
Either don't connect it to the internet ever (best), or make sure to turn off all the insanely invasive disgusting spying features like ACR. LG are among the worst offenders.

I have it in a room with a huge window and never feel it isn't bright enough, usually leave it at about 50%.

Been doing research for specifically gaming. The current 3 options in the $500-$600 range. TCL QM7K, Hisense U75QG and this. The major downside the LG B5 is just how dim it is. The LG B5 in SDR and HDR hovers around the 650 nits mark. The LG C5 is 1300 nits. I have seen both side by side in the display mode in store and the colors are easily muted on the B5 next to the C5 because of the reduced nits.
So the other 2 TVs. The TCL is 1700 to 1800 nits The Hisense is 2500 nits. What does Rtings rate each in gaming. Hisense 7.8 TCL 7.8 LG 8.5, really is too bad just how dim the LG is. I know most will never leave their TV on full bright, but it does effect how the color pops.
Haven't made a choice yet, still hoping the LG C5 drops close to $700 like the C4 did back in February.
