I learned this the hard way, but there's a limit of 6 sensors connected to the same thermostat

Google Nest Temperature Sensor 2nd Gen is a small add on for Nest thermostat setups that helps monitor extra rooms, garages, basements, or other zones and can trigger heating automations. It works best when paired with a compatible thermostat, and the sensor count is capped at six per thermostat. Temperature control is not instant, with some delay and a few degrees of drift reported, so it is better for general comfort than pinpoint room control. It also does not appear to work reliably on its own without a thermostat.

  • The sensor can be used with Zigbee devices beyond the Nest ecosystem for flexible temperature-triggered control.

    SebastianTph7

  • The sensor can support multi-location monitoring such as garage or basement temperature to trigger heating when temperatures drop.

    SebastianT

  • The sensor can connect to a Nest thermostat after correcting a backwards battery installation.

    ScottJ

  • The sensor may not show correct temperature when used without connecting to a Nest thermostat.

    Convit161Convit161

  • The sensor can only be selected as one temperature-control input on a Nest thermostat, which limits multi-room averaging.

    jormaster3k

  • Temperature readings can arrive with a noticeable delay, which can cause HVAC to run longer and rooms to drift a few degrees.

    playnasc

  • Connecting more than six sensors to the same thermostat can hit a connection limit.

Is there any difference between first and second gen sensor? Based on my google search, there seemed to be none other than the form factor.

These things were $5 a pop earlier this year at Home Depot. I should have picked up a few more 😑.

Can't you just add as many sensors as you want to Google Home without linking them to a thermostat? Then, you can make automations that control your thermostat manually though it won't necessarily take the average of all the thermostats like it normally would if you link them directly. However, I feel like you can get around this using the script editor.

Dumb question but what's the point of a second sensor? You have two temps - you still have to pick a temp that makes both zones comfortable (unless you have automatic duct dampers)

You can always monitor temp is garage, basement, etc. I use 2nd sensor to monitor temp in my garage. If it's low, then I turn on electric heater that is on a ZigBee switch.

I have the newest one... never hooked it up. Still has the battery strip to pull.

Is it worth anything... is there a point to using it?

I have two of these and there definitely is some delay with the temperature readings from the sensor to the thermostat. My HVAC will stay on for a few minutes longer than usual even though the actual room temperature is already at the set point which results in the room being +/- 2 or 3 degrees from the set point.
I'm sure this is "within spec" for devices like these but don't expect to get pinpoint temperatures especially if you only intend to select the sensor in one room.

I tried that but the sensors didn't show correct temperature without connection with a thermostat

I heard about Google EOLing one of their Nest Thermostats. Can these be used independently of a nest thermostat?

Fair warning, you can only select one of these sensors for the Nest thermostat to use for temperature control. You cannot use them to determine an average sensor temperature like some other thermostats can.
