The UniFi Gateway Fiber is a fanless, quiet 10 gigabit gateway that makes sense when you already have a separate UniFi controller or can run the management software on a server or in Docker. It is praised as a solid router for fast WAN setups, including SFP to Ethernet links and multi gigabit fiber service, with IDS and IPS throughput around 3.5 gigabits. The main catch is that this is the UXG Fiber, not the UCG Fiber, so it does not include UniFi software built in and needs external management. The overlapping model names make it easy to buy the wrong unit, so the naming deserves close attention.

  • home network upgraders who already run a UniFi controller elsewhere (or can run the controller software in Docker/Portainer) because this is the UXG-Fiber model that needs something external to manage, and commenters say it's easy to stand up the management software in a Docker container (even on a low-end NAS).

  • people trying to get more WAN speed on a UniFi setup (like a UDM Pro) because commenters note you can use an SFP-to-Ethernet adapter on the SFP WAN port to reach up to 10Gbps instead of replacing the whole unit.

  • multi-floor UniFi users who want a reliable inter-floor link because a commenter reports a 10G SFP-to-Ethernet connection between floors to a 2.5Gb switch with a 10Gb uplink "works great" with no issues.

  • buyers who might mix up UniFi Gateway model names because commenters warn the overlapping naming makes it easy to buy the wrong UniFi Gateway model, and they advise being very careful.

  • buyers who expect "Cloud" gateway fiber with UniFi software built in because commenters clarify this is not the "Cloud" gateway fiber and therefore doesn't include UniFi software built in.

  • people who don't want to deal with UniFi controller setup and management because this deal is for the UXG-Fiber, which requires an external controller/management (as opposed to the UCG-Fiber that has a built-in controller).

  • people who are counting on IDS/IPS throughput to be very high for heavy security inspection because one commenter tried an H!Fiber SFP and saw IDS/IPS throughput around 3.5 Gbps, saying it may be fine for a 3 Gbps Google Fiber connection but questioning whether it's worth the monthly cost when bandwidth isn't heavily utilized.

It runs the same. I run it as a software on my windows server. Only problem I run into is when it fails to start automatically. I've heard the same happens with Dockers sometimes.
I've never had an issue with running it in docker on a Linux box. Been doing this for years.

new to Ubiquiti here. Trying to upgrade from Asus AI Mesh. Like everyone else, I am eyeing on UCG-Fiber but it is not on sale. The price for the UCG-MAX and UXG-Fiber is pretty good.
Does it make sense to purchase both UCG-MAX and UXG-Fiber ? My thought is to use UCG-MAX as the controller and a managed switch, UXG-Fiber as the router.

Just FYI, this is not the "Cloud" gateway fiber, so no unifi software built in...
What do you mean? Mine absolutely has Unifi built in...

You have a UCG not UXG then... This is definitely tricky marketing on their part...

As long as you have a server with a docker or know how to run the Unifi software outside of the device I think this is the superior unit vs. the other one they're selling at the same price with the storage and software onboard. Both are good units and a fair price for the brand I'd say.

I run the Unifi frontend on my server in a docker/portainer so I don't need the box doing all the work to host the software, these run fanless/cool/quiet as well.

In for one.
