The UniFi Gateway Fiber is a fanless, quiet 10 gigabit gateway that makes sense when you already have a separate UniFi controller or can run the management software on a server or in Docker. It is praised as a solid router for fast WAN setups, including SFP to Ethernet links and multi gigabit fiber service, with IDS and IPS throughput around 3.5 gigabits. The main catch is that this is the UXG Fiber, not the UCG Fiber, so it does not include UniFi software built in and needs external management. The overlapping model names make it easy to buy the wrong unit, so the naming deserves close attention.
Common Questions (4)
No. This is the UXG-Fiber, which needs an external controller or management software; the UCG-Fiber is the version with a built-in controller. If you already run UniFi software on a server, Docker, or a NAS, this model can fit well.
Yes. UniFi management software can be run in Docker on Linux, Windows, Synology, or Portainer, and it has been used that way for years. The main practical caveat is that the service may occasionally fail to start automatically.
The naming is easy to mix up because UXG-Fiber and UCG-Fiber look similar, but they are different products. The UXG-Fiber is the gateway-only model, while the UCG-Fiber includes the controller/software built in.
Yes. An SFP-to-Ethernet adapter on the UDM Pro's SFP WAN port can provide up to 10Gbps, so a full replacement is not necessary for faster WAN service.

Does it make sense to purchase both UCG-MAX and UXG-Fiber ? My thought is to use UCG-MAX as the controller and a managed switch, UXG-Fiber as the router.
I run the Unifi frontend on my server in a docker/portainer so I don't need the box doing all the work to host the software, these run fanless/cool/quiet as well.
In for one.
