Although my unit yet to arrive, I did get some hands on / flight time a couple weeks ago. My first impression upon handling the Skyrover S1 was: "What? Another Mini 4k?" But it's much more than that.

Let's explore some of the specs. The Mini 4k is 4k30. Skyrover S1 can do 4k60. The Mini 4k flight time is 31 minutes. Skyrover S1 is 40 minutes. So it seems like we're touching on some of the Mini 3 Pro features here.

Now, onto the standout features. The Skyrover S1 can do activetrack and spotlight. It also has obstacle avoidance. These are features not available on the Mini 4k, and typically only found on models like the Mini 4 Pro and higher. Just like the Mini 4k, the Skyrover S1 can also do quick shots, and because you are using app/remote, your drone can go much higher and it will look much more cinematic than the automated quickshots you get from the DJI Neo or Flip which limited to 10 meters (without a remote).

As far as picture quality, I also own most of the DJI lineup (Neo, Flip, Mini 5 Pro, Mavic 4 Pro, etc). Although I like drones, I'm still a novice, and day time shots in good lighting with this Skyrover S1 could definitely fool me into thinking it came from some of the higher end DJI drones.

I'm not going to get into geopolitics and why Skyrover exists in this review, but I will explore Skyrover's positioning and target market. They seem to be specifically focused on the 249g-and-under category, a weight class free of regulation for hobbyists, at an affordable price point. I mention this because the biggest drawback of the Skyrover series is that there is no RC2 remote equivalent. Having to connect my phone to the remote controller is the main reason why in 2017 I used my Mavic 1 Pro for an hour or two and then put it away for 8 years untouched.

So long as Skyrover continues to focus on the under 249g category and affordability, I doubt they will introduce a DJI RC2 remote equivalent. However, if they ever start releasing an Air3S equivalent, then I will really expect them to offer their version of the RC2 remote, which completely changes the game in reducing the friction of piloting a camera drone.

Is this a different company from DJI or is it one of their shell companies?
