They listen for sounds and extremely quickly actively cancel most noise by sending cancelling sound waves. It works surprisingly well for not sealing in your ear. The pros with the silicone ear tips were never comfortable for me so these are the best option for people in my same boat. Hope that helps! Good luck!

Makes me blah that I got the AirPods-3G MagSafe-case from Costco a lil' over a year ago (right before the 4G release) for ~$140'ish, and I haven't really been satisfied with them (ie. fit, sound, etc). The spatial feature is decent.

The 4th-gen improved the fit, sound, and offered ANC — all for a lot less $$$. Even latter last year, they were priced very well.

Though USB-A/Lightning case is arguably more user-friendly for me (considering all the Lightning devices/cables that I have).
