I bought my pair almost exactly 2 years ago at BB a STEAL of a price at the time and they were the pink ones. Anyways the guy who unlocked the case was so helpful. Let me see the box and even open, inspect and try them on before buying. Literally looked brand new. You could tell they'd been opened but everything was there in immaculate condition. I got out to my car and it's like you say. Somebody else paired to it. It took a minute to get somebody who understood what I was talking about but not only were they totally cool about getting a refund they let me pick a new pair as a replacement and I was able to pick a better color too. Not saying this would be everyone's experience, but I'd guess worst case scenario you should've been able to get a refund.

Yep, Best Buy open boxed stock quality depends on the professionalism of the store (manager) and the staff who refurbish. You're playing the lottery but you have a good chance of winning if the description matches whats in the box. Never, ever buy Airpods of any kind open-boxed unless you can turn it on and pair it to your iPhone. If it has someone else's name on it, some features will be disabled unless the original owner disconnects it. Will the returns dept check for this? Unlikely, maybe.

I would say its best to just be aware this is a possibility when buying used apple products. I've gotten some great things this way however I had this happen with an apple watch I purchased used like new off of Amazon and had to return it.

Amazon is worse. Best buy at least checks you are returning the same product. I'm at 50/50 of amazon used items just being straight up broken, I got a monitor that was "fair" that was completely smashed, didn't even need to turn it on to tell. That said best buy isn't that much better, I got an open box usb adapter that had pubes in the box and it was listed as fair because of "residue".

I'll roll the dice on anything open box if the discount is good enough with Amazon or Best Buy; been burned by both. Worst case it's not what I wanted and I return it. With the exception of something very large, returns are a breeze both with Amazon and Best Buy.

Guys - don't buy open box. I bought an open box "good" condition AirPod Max yesterday. There is a large paint chip on the side, some nasty residue, etc. They are going right back tomorrow. I might just buy a brand new one instead.
