Sony WH 1000XM4 is a strong over ear noise canceling headphone with standout ANC, solid sound, and long battery life. The noise cancellation is especially effective on airplanes, for fan noise, speech, treadmill use, and even while plugged into the 3.5 millimeter jack. Sound is often described as full and fun, and the app adds useful control options, including turning touch controls off. Comfort is good for many heads and can hold up for long sessions, though the touch controls can be finicky and some find the fit snug or tiring after a few hours. Build durability appears uneven, but long term use has also held up well for others.
airplane flyers who care about strong noise cancellation because multiple commenters say the noise cancelling on airplanes is amazing.
long-haul travelers who want ANC that still works when they plug in via 3.5mm because the XM4 ANC continues to work even with the auxiliary jack.
people who wear over-ear headphones for 8+ hours a day because one commenter says they've worn XM3/XM4 at least 8 hours/day for 5+ years without discomfort and "forget" they're on.
commuters and gym users who want to block treadmill noise while listening to podcasts because one commenter uses them on the treadmill daily and says the noise cancelling is effective enough to watch podcasts without treadmill sound.
buyers who want more than basic controls and like tweaking sound because commenters say Sony's app/functionality and support for lossless music are a plus versus simpler button-only options.
people who hate touch controls because commenters report the touch controls are unintuitive/sensitive (jacket brushing triggers actions) and can become uncomfortable after 2-3 hours on longer flights.
buyers who prioritize comfort above all else because at least one commenter says Bose QuietComfort is more comfortable and that comfort is their #1 priority.
people who are sensitive to "pressure" sensations from ANC because one commenter disliked Bose QC's high-altitude pressure feeling from ANC and didn't remember that with Sony.
buyers who need headphones that fold for storage/travel because one commenter calls the XM4 a failure specifically noting they don't fold.
people who are rough on gear with heavy sweaty outdoor use because one commenter says the ear cups eventually rip (3rd set) after heavy sweaty outdoor use.

I did notice the ANC to be slight letdown in comparison in two fronts:
1. ANC not as strong as XM5 that I tested at the store (no XM4s at store to compare)
2. ANC on BoseQC creates a weird high altitude pressure type feeling which I do not like. I don't remember that with XM5.

1. I absolutely hate the touch controls. They're not intuitive. Maybe if I wore them every day I could remember what motion triggers which action, but I only wear them when traveling. They're also simultaneously too sensitive and not sensitive enough. The hood of my jacket can brush them and trigger some action. But if I'm trying to do something, nothing I do seems to register with them.
2. I can wear them for 2-3 hours max before they become uncomfortable. For domestic travel in The States it's usually enough, but during longer flights I have to take them off and take a break.
