Sony WH 1000XM4 is a strong over ear noise canceling headphone with standout ANC, solid sound, and long battery life. The noise cancellation is especially effective on airplanes, for fan noise, speech, treadmill use, and even while plugged into the 3.5 millimeter jack. Sound is often described as full and fun, and the app adds useful control options, including turning touch controls off. Comfort is good for many heads and can hold up for long sessions, though the touch controls can be finicky and some find the fit snug or tiring after a few hours. Build durability appears uneven, but long term use has also held up well for others.
Common Questions (5)
Bose QC is generally more comfortable, while the XM4 can feel snugger and may become uncomfortable after 2-3 hours for some users. The XM4 is often described as having slightly better ANC, especially for fan noise and speech, though Bose is also reported as quieter by some. Comfort is the main reason to choose Bose; ANC and Sony's extra features favor the XM4.
At $159.99, it is still considered a strong buy for its ANC, sound, and battery life, with several long-term owners saying it remains worth it years later. One comment also notes that if Best Buy matches, PayPal 20% back can bring it to just above the all-time low.
Several owners report 5+ years of use with the XM4 still in great condition, while others say the ear cups can eventually rip with heavy sweaty use. The practical takeaway is that the headphones themselves can be durable, but the pads may need replacement over time.
Yes. The touch controls can be turned off entirely, which avoids accidental triggers from clothing and removes the need to remember the gestures.
Yes. The XM4's ANC still works when plugged into the 3.5mm auxiliary jack, so you can use wired audio without losing noise canceling.

Personally I feel the over-the-head nc headset is not convenient. This one sits on the corner for the past year until recently for my leaf blowing job.
