I actually got the 247 piece set from Amazon back in July for $99.

In my personal experience these sets tend to get discounted more in April than for Black Friday deals.

This seems like a reasonable deal with mostly socket part pieces. Most other "sets" are padded with screwdriver bit pieces...

This is a very decent set.

The only question is whether or not the days of $99 are officially over. These DeWalt sets (192, 204, 205, 247 piece) have occasionally been $99 over the years at various places, but what was once a common deal has become harder and harder to find. At this point, it's debatable that we will see it again. I personally haven't seen it in the past year or two.

Good — all 6 points, good carry case (not for tool chest) and made in Tiawan

Mid - usually Black Friday tool deals are 50% off, but China made

Rec - compare to similar sets, like the Quinn Master sets or 428p on sale for $300

This is a great set and a pretty darn good price. I have the142 that I got well under $100. Only cons are the lever to switch ratchet direction has a hair trigger (nbd if you have another favorite ratchet) and it's a lot of tools to lug around and find workspace for. That said, I'd jump all over this if I didn't already have the smaller set.

This is the same as great* Dewalt 192-pc set, but with 12 wrenches...hence the "204-pc".
The lowest that the 192-pc set was $120 in 2020. Since then, $135 for the 192-pc set, so this is a great price.

*great because there are no bits to jack up the count.
This set is purely sockets with allen wrenches and a handful of hex bit sockets and some star bits sockets thrown in.

Do you think the recent 201 set amzn basics that went on sale for $50 would be better for me? I only occasionally work on cars so not heavy duty work. They haven't shipped it yet so there's a long delay. That set do have a little padding though. https://a.co/d/cfx7ODe

Or even this husky set for $99

Good set but not a fan of the case. Without a solid, reliable case the sockets inevitably get lost. Half the sockets fall out in the absence of a thin piece of dividing foam.

The $99 sets on BF (Husky, Kobalt) are good beginner sets.
You can start there and add as you need, but typically, when you add, you will have overlaps.
I say pay the extra $37 (which is better than having to spend 10, 15, etc. here and there) and get the better complete socket set. Unless you are working on axles or clutches*, this set will have every socket you will ever need. Note that these are not for impact wrenches, so just use with hand tools like ratchets, breaker bars, and torque wrenches.
*clutches may require 12-point sockets as some other spots. For that, Harbor Freight has a good small 12-pt socket set. Axles are sometimes 12-pt, and you will need an impact set (8-pc) on Amazon or Vevor (up to like 36mm) for like $25.

I just replaced a wheel bearing on my van. Bought the whole knuckle + bearing for $110 on Amazon. Had to remove the axle. Typical cost is $500+ at a shop or dealer. (I have done this before a few times, so I had the larger sockets. Just an example of savings if you can do it yourself...safely.)

I have this set, and about 5 other sets including the Husky one. I hate the Husky one - the dumb drawers and sockets never stay in place. Don't listen to those that say this one has a lousy case - it's extremely good; the sockets need to be pulled out with a screwdriver because they are in so tight. It is by far my favorite set - it's the one I use when I have a decent-sized job. My only problem with it? It is surprisingly heavy, and thus not one you want to cart around.

I got mine for $99 about 5-6 years ago, and I think that $137 is about as good as you're going to get now. I'm tempted to buy another.

Thank you! I did not know these are not made for use with impact drivers. Thank you for pointing that out.
