Sennheiser Momentum 4 Wireless stands out for sound quality and long battery life, with strong clarity, neutral bass, and about 65 hours with noise canceling on. The sound is often described as better than Sony XM4 and XM5 models, and the ear pads are easy to replace if comfort needs a boost. The main tradeoffs are touch controls, transparency mode, and noise canceling that can feel less polished than Sony or Bose. Comfort also seems dependent on head shape, making this a strong fit for listeners who care most about audio.
Listeners who prioritize detailed sound over app polish, because the Momentum 4 is repeatedly described as sounding better than Sony XM4, XM5, and Bose alternatives.
People with larger heads who can tolerate a snug fit, because the ear cups can press on the ears after a few hours and aftermarket pads can improve comfort.
People who want the most reliable touch controls and auto-power behavior, because the touch controls can be finicky and the unit can switch on unexpectedly.
The Momentum 4 is repeatedly described as the stronger sound-first choice, with better clarity and more neutral bass than Bose models and better sound than Sony XM4/XM5 for many listeners. The tradeoff is that Sony and Bose are reported to offer better ANC, controls, and overall user experience.
Comfort is good for many people, but larger heads can feel pressure on the ears after a few hours. Ear pads are easy to replace, and cooling-gel or larger aftermarket pads can improve comfort if the stock fit is too snug.
Touch controls are a common complaint, and the auto-off/auto-on behavior has been reported as annoying. The auto-turn-on issue may have been fixed in later use, but the controls are still considered less refined than Sony or Bose.
Battery life is reported at about 65 hours with ANC on, which is a major advantage over many rivals. That long runtime is one of the main reasons shoppers favor it over Sony and Bose models.
Amazon has the Black/Copper and the Graphite also on sale for under $200. Looks better than the Denim IMHO. Wondering about the ear comfort. I am a Sennheiser fan and I bought the Sennheiser HD 4.5 back in 2019 on BF but returned them because the ear cups did not feel comfy. I currently use the AT-M50xBT2, which I love.
That said, I usually love the Sennheiser sound and the mic quality is usually top notch as well, such as on the SC 660 PC headset, for example.
I was going to pull the trigger on these but decided to read the Amazon reviews. A lot of reviewers complained about the touch controls and the "Auto-Off" feature which can sometime switch the unit on. A lot of positive reviews on the sound quality but the ANC was so-so or "meh" for many. Decided to pass on these and look at the Sony XM5's for a little bit more. Still deciding.

Yeah touch control a bit iffy, but I can deal with it. Having compared both momentum and xm6 in terms of sound (using a popular autoeq preset), I'll pick momentum every time. Also way more comfortable.

I think they fixed the issue with it turning on. Haven't had it occur lately. In my opinion they are the best sounding headphones in their class.

Are these a significant upgrade over the Sony XM4?
Significant upgrade? no. But they are better. I have had XM4s and I currently have these. These sound way better and the battery life is much better. these have a 65ish hour battery life with ANC on.
The only issue I have with them is I have a big ass head and they kind of push on my ears so after a few hours my ears start to hurt. Not a lot but enough to be annoying. I designed and 3d printed an adapter to use the earpads off of beyerdynamic headphones. they are bigger and more comfortable but if you don't have a massive head like me they would be perfectly comfortable
Are these a significant upgrade over the Sony XM4?
Not better, overall, in my experience. These are for those who prioritize sound quality over the more refined, user-friendly controls, better noise-cancelling, & user experience offered by the bigger, more mainstream offerings like Sony & Bose in this price range. Despite offering 'better clarity' (to my ears, not necessarly 'better' for extended hours of listening), I use my XM4s (excellent & better EQ), & the wife uses the QuietComforts more often than these. The advantage of top-level noise cancellation in all but the quietest of spaces should not be underestimated in acheiving an enjoyable listening experience without risking ear damage. It really boils down to preference, & neither of us prefer the subjectively better 'sound quality' (which is lacking in none of the 3) over the better overall user experience. But we're all different in our preferences. The Bose are slightly more comfortable, but I wear the XM4s for hours with no complaints. I prefer the EQ'd sound of the XM4s over the QuietComforts, & find the Senns become uncomfortable faster of the 3. That said, had I purchased only the Senns, I'd have adapted, perhaps stretching the band, &/or replacing the earcups with plusher aftermarket versions.
Are these a significant upgrade over the Sony XM4?
Depends on your need.
Sound quality and battery life is better on Momentum. ANC, APP, and ear cup comfort is better on XM4.
I think overall xm4 is better all around headphone. Had Momentum for about 2 yrs and xm4 for 3 yrs.

The ear pads are also easy to replace if desired, there are some cooling gel earpad replacements that work well.
