This Hulu add on is mainly attractive for getting HBO Max with ads at a low monthly price, especially for people trying to stack it with Amex streaming credits. The strongest upside is the potential to keep Hulu billing in play while trimming out of pocket cost, and the Hulu app itself is preferred over HBO's app by some. The catch is that the promo is finicky, often requiring Hulu billing and a qualifying base plan, and it frequently jumps to $9.99 or fails to combine with the $5 Disney and Hulu bundle. Ads are heavy, and the plan does not include 4K.
Common Questions (5)
No. The $3 HBO Max add-on is only available on non-discounted Hulu base plans, and once the $5 Hulu/Disney+ bundle is active the HBO add-on typically jumps to $10. The practical workaround is to keep the bundle separate and get HBO Max through HBO directly if you want the lower promo price.
Yes, but only when the charge is billed through Hulu, ESPN, or DisneyPlus.com under the card terms. If the bundle is billed through Disney, the credit may not apply, so the billing path matters for getting the monthly statement credit.
Yes. The promo is described as available for Hulu-only or Hulu-billed accounts, and it is not available to Disney+ Hulu bundle subscribers billed through Disney. Existing subscribers may need to redeem it from the Hulu account page rather than through the Disney bundle.
No sports were mentioned for the ads tier, and the $2.99/$3 promo is reported to be limited to 1080p rather than 4K. That makes it cheaper, but it may be a poor fit if you want live sports or higher-resolution playback on a large TV.
The ads can be very frequent, with reports of breaks every 5 minutes and ad pods lasting just over a minute. That makes the low monthly price attractive mainly if you can tolerate heavy ad load.

I create a new log in with new email will that work?
You can just go to the HBO Max site and at the top is a banner with the HBO Max special that doesn't require you to bundle the deal. It's $2.99 for HBO Max. Same price, it's just not bundled with Disney/ Hulu.
Of course, for those without one of those Amex cards, it's a moot point and one can sign up on HBO directly like you mentioned.
