The WD Red Plus 10TB is a NAS drive that lands around $16 to $17 per terabyte, which makes it feel reasonable for a reputable midrange model. It is being compared with larger Red Pro options and 12TB Red Plus drives, but the 10TB stands out as the simpler capacity choice for a basic NAS or NVR upgrade. The drive is air filled, while only the WD120EFBX 12TB Red Plus is helium filled. Shipping and stock are the main friction points, with Amazon often slow and some alternate listings already out of stock.

  • Home NAS builders filling a basic two-bay setup, because the drive is a reasonable per-terabyte option for mirrored storage.

  • Buyers who want a quieter desktop NAS in a closet, because the drive is air-filled and noise concerns matter less in enclosed spaces.

  • Shoppers comparing capacities for better value, because the 12TB option can work out cheaper per terabyte than the 10TB drive.

  • Owners replacing an aging surveillance drive, because it suits an NVR that has already run for years under heavy power-on hours.

  • Noise-sensitive NAS owners keeping the enclosure in a living area, because this 10TB model is air-filled and has been avoided for being loud.

  • Buyers who need the lowest cost per terabyte, because larger Red Pro drives can deliver better value.

  • Shoppers expecting the extra coupon to reduce an already discounted price, because the promotion removes the discount instead of stacking.

  • People who need immediate delivery, because some orders have shown long shipping or stuck order status.

Those reviews are 4 years old. I read in the Amazon reviews "WD RED PLUS 12TB (JUST the 12TB) is helium filled and very quiet", so for $30 more you get 2TB increase and low noise. Anyone know the truth here?
Good callout. Looks like only one of the two 12 TB variations, specifically the WD120EFBX is helium filled of the current Plus line. The rest (including this 10 TB one) is air filled.

WD's site shows the 12TB as WD120EFGX so not helium filled.

I was hoping that was the case since they do take paypal and can get the 20% off

edit:

the other deal posted for newegg shows the helium filled version and they also take paypal. i wish i didnt need (4) of them for my NAS

FYI I've avoided this specific 10 GB serial number due to the purported loudness of the drives. May not bother everyone esp if your NAS is in a closet.

Nice find. That image with the specs is useful too (attached here just in case). That noise level rating alone makes it compelling to just throw an extra $30 at the 12TB.
Power requirements are also lower on the 12TB, too. Both likely because of helium fill. Nice.

Edit: Apparently the 12TB Red on sale for $200 is NOT helium filled

I hate what has happened to HDD prices lately, but for a midsize and relatively reputable drive, this seems somewhat reasonable @ $17/TB. I've had the itch to upgrade my old 3TB WD Red that's been acting as an NVR drive for 6+ years now. I probably should considering its power-on hours.Edit: B&H Photo has it for $170 too if you want to avoid Amazon - this is probably who they price matched: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/pr..._7200.html
Buy it direct from WD for the same price and free shipping.

If you are interested in the Pro version, there are WD122KFBX and WD121KFBX. The first one is air-filled with a 512mb cache. The second one is helium w/256mb.

I just started looking for drives for my first NAS.
Why have prices gone up so much? Anything more to it than inflation?

And any recommended drive specific sites besides diskprices.com to monitor?

Not all 12TB have helium according to WD's data sheet. It depends on the part number.

I saw it come up on the related deals bottom banner. I think even the tittle said helium in it. Search sucks and now I can't find it.

I had not been following HDD prices since the data center building boom. Are they similar to the jump in memory prices?

at least for used drives, enterprise grades drives were really affordable. They've been nearly double the low point for about a year now.
