Sonos Roam 2 stands out as a compact, waterproof portable speaker that works well for showers and travel, with wireless charging and easy Wi Fi authorization for hotels or Airbnbs. The sound gets praise for clear bass, treble, and mids, and the PayPal 20 percent back offer can soften the price. The main knocks are weak battery life, occasional sync issues with a soundbar, and the fact that it is not supported as official surrounds in Sonos software. It is a handy pick if portability matters more than surround duty.
people who want a portable, waterproof speaker for shower use because the Roam is "completely waterproof," sounds good in the shower, and can be used on a wireless charging pad.
buyers who want a Sonos surround setup on sale because one commenter says they use cheaper One SLs for surrounds and get better sound quality than using Roam 2 as surrounds.
people who already own older Sonos speakers and want to keep using them because one commenter says old hardware still works with the S1 app while newer features require the newer S2 app.
home theater shoppers trying to use Roam 2 as surrounds through official Sonos software because a commenter says it can't be used as surrounds through the official software (at least not reliably), and recommends One SLs instead.
buyers who are worried about reliability syncing with a soundbar because one commenter says their Roam was advertised to sync but only works about 25% of the time and "dies so fast."
people who already upgraded to a different portable Sonos model and expect to keep using the Roam because one commenter says after getting a Move 2 they "never listen to it anymore."
buyers who are concerned about future software updates making hardware unusable because one commenter says they will never buy Sonos due to what they've heard about updates breaking older hardware.
Yes, if PayPal shows the option under "ways to pay," then selecting "pay in 4" can trigger the 20% back in points. The option may not appear immediately, so it helps to open PayPal's payment methods menu.
Yes. It is described as completely waterproof, easy to control by voice in the shower, and usable on a wireless charging pad. It also can be authorized for Wi‑Fi when traveling, so it can work in Airbnbs or hotels without much phone setup.
Older Sonos hardware can still be used with the S1 app, while newer products use the S2 app. Older speakers may not support newer features like Dolby Atmos or spatial audio because of memory and processing limits, but they are not automatically unusable.
Not through the official Sonos software. It may be possible with third-party apps, but the practical surround choice is a pair of One SLs, which are cheaper on sale and reported to sound better for that use.
No. Not through the official software at least. I've read that you can force it through some third party apps, but I've never bothered to try. I use One SLs for surrounds, they're cheaper on sale than these Roams. Way better sound quality too.

based on what I've heard from others about sonos making their older hardware unusable through updates I will never buy a sonos speaker
Nope. You can still use all the old stuff with the S1 app. They have a new app S2 for the new stuff. Old hardware is just too basic for all the new features of 2025, dolby atmos, spacial audio etc, and can't run on the new app as it requires more memory and better processing. I have fifteen year old speakers that run on the new app just fine. Misinformation is the rule these days unfortunately, but hey AI is here to save us from that, ha. With these sale prices their Black Friday sales should be abysmal
I despise this speaker; advertised to sync up to my soundbar and it's always hit or miss. Works about 25% of the time and it dies so fast. I was very disappointed.
Roam is a pretty lame speaker (have one) and once I got a Move2 I never listen to it anymore.
I think one of the selling points for Roam was to allow people (like a guest) to connect to the Roam via Bluetooth and have it play on the whole Sonos system. I didn't buy one, but that is what I read.
