I loved Elden Ring but hated the DLC Shadow of the Erdtree. I thought it was extra, wicked hard and that's after I beat the base game numerous times. I think a casual player will get more mileage out of the $15 base game at Walmart.

I'm not a dark souls enjoyer, but I played the shit out of elden ring including the DLC. The final boss in the DLC was too hard for me personally, but I'm not a hardcore souls game player so I chalked it up to me needing to get good. I think the DLC is challenging and not something you should touch on your first play through, that's for sure. But once you learn the scaling of the shadow realm and how much getting the fragments boosts you up, I think it's totally reasonable as far as difficulty.

I generally hate Souls games but absolutely loved the Elden Ring base game. I'm afraid to get the DLC though because I've heard nothing but similar stories about how hard it is compared to the base game. They should have just kept the difficulty the same but added more content.

The DLC area scales your level down to 1 and you have to find these exclusive level-up items to gain power. FromSoft did this to keep high-level builds from bulldozing through. I found the DLC area just as challenging as the main game but the final boss is wicked hard. If you've played DS3 think Midir or Frieda in terms of challenge.

cheating FTW, souls games get boring when you have to youtube too much for grind spots or special builds. Dark Souls 2 was the last one I was motivated to research the game a bunch.
