The biggest disadvantage of this pack is the lack of organization. Only one top pocket and one unsecured front pouch.

what makes this a "mens" backpack? there's a womens "fairview" 40l backpack that looks the same but is ~$45 more. looking for a nice carry-on backpack for the wife and wondering if this could work

A few trivial differences such as torso length, straps curve. Retail prices should be similar and this is a deal for men's version.

This is a exceptional bag, but I would likely wait until the 55L goes onsale as it includes the 15L day pack. This bag is great if you need to walk long distances, but if using it mainly as a airtravel bag I would likely consider the 35L daylite or one of their other 30-35L options. Osprey Proxima bag is a great option.

Basically there is finding a backpack and finding the perfect Backback. So the main difference would be which is comfortable for her...

If you are just catching flights I would likely get a Daylite 35L or Osprey Proxima. If I thought I might trek a bit with the bag I would test the Fairpoint and Fairview and see which she prefers. Extra money is well worth the extra comfort. I would also lean towards getting 55L version unless you already have a great day bag. I would love to see a slightly improved 15L option for the Fairpoint series as the water bottle pockets are decent, but could be better.

Basically the questions you normally need to ask is
Will I take it Trekking?
Do I need Hip Straps and will they line up well?
Do I need or would I like it to attach well to rolling suitcases?

55L is an interesting bag, but there are some key differences with the 40. Unfortunately, the 55L isn't just the 40L with a day bag. The "40L portion" of the 55L does not have the laptop sleeve, nor front waterbottle pockets. Thus, if you are going to utilize those you are tied to using the daybag for that type of storage. 40L can accommodate a separately purchased day bag (though stock seems to be drying up on the 2024 edition of that. There are also lots of youtube videos about how to connect other osprey daybags to the 40L, which while not as seamless as the tailor made one, it is a workable solution.

I have the older version and personally prefer a hybrid roller backpack than a full-time 35L+ backpack like this. This 40L pack when fully loaded can get heavy and despite the beefy straps and waist belt can still be a strain on the shoulder and back after awhile. At least in my case I was getting shoulder and back pain using it full-time. A roller backpack allowed for it to be off my back most of the time but also the versatility to carry it as a backpack and be hands-free when needed.

For budget airlines the dimensions on this bag are obviously over the "personal item" requirements just by sight and won't fit in the "checker" bin if stopped at the gate due to the internal wire frame. Strict European budget airlines like Ryan Air make most of their money by nickel and dime and will happily charge $$$ for the overage at the gate that people would be better off just pay less as a cabin carry-on bag to start with. For personal item I travelled with the Daylite 26+6 (currently on-sale btw) and had zero issues with Ryan on a recent trip to Italy and Greece.

is it been considered as a backpack or a large item for carry on?
I usually have 20 inch roller luggage and a computer backpack as carryon, not sure is it a problem if I get 20 inch roller luggage and this 40L bag

Sorry I tend to forget the differences between the bags as my first 55L had a 40L bag. So it had the water bottle pockets and sleeve. Likely someone exchanged it or a mistake was made.

40L has nice front pocket, great for water bottles. Top small item pocket. Computer sleeve. Full size mesh pocket on flap.

55L has more space on the inside, 2/3 size pocket on flap and extra side mesh pocket.

The osprey 15l day bag could use some upgrades and other day bags are better. Mainly improved water bottle pockets would be nice.
