The Mac mini M4 with 24GB RAM stands out as a compact desktop for heavier multitasking, Docker, and other memory hungry workflows. The extra unified memory can matter because macOS uses RAM for both system and graphics tasks, and the machine can lean on swap and the SSD when needed. The 256GB internal drive is workable if paired with a fast USB C external SSD, though storage upgrades are often seen as more compelling than paying for RAM alone. For casual browsing and productivity, 16GB is often described as enough, while power users may want to look higher up the lineup.
people who want to buy the 256GB internal model and plan to add external storage because commenters said you can pair it with a decent USB-C external SSD and that the internal SSD is removable/upgradeable depending on risk tolerance.
casual Mac mini users who mainly do browsing, productivity, and light workloads because commenters said the 24GB model will be more than enough for "casual use."
power users running heavier container workloads because one commenter specifically said they run way too many Docker images on the smaller Mac mini and were discussing this configuration.
buyers who will actually benefit from extra unified memory (e.g., when video RAM and system RAM overlap) because commenters explained Macs use unified memory and argued 24GB can be meaningfully better than 16GB for real workloads.
people planning heavy 3D/video editing or long-context local LLM work because a commenter with a higher-spec Mac mini said 24GB probably isn't the best choice for heavy 3D/video editing or longer-context local LLMs.
buyers who are mainly looking for the best value upgrade from 16GB to 24GB because commenters criticized the pricing as "$250 more for a mere 8gb of ram," calling it a major yikes.
people who care more about storage capacity/speed than RAM because commenters suggested that for normal use, paying for a 512GB drive would be more important than the RAM upgrade.
power users who need a step up beyond the mini because one commenter said power users should spend more and get a Mac Studio instead of the highest-spec mini.

Thanks OP for posting this ONE minute after mid-night.
UPDATE: I did find the youtube video where the guy goes into great detail with the 16gb vs 24gb mac mini m4. Enjoy

At end of video he said the basic 16gb model is good for most people because this mac makes good use of how it uses memory, device has 8gb of swap memory, plus it can tap into the SSD card to help too. The guy has both the 16gb ram and 24gb models ... he didn't notice hardly any difference. BUT if some guys do things where is can help, I guess get the 24gb model. JUST watch the video first. And comment in this thread and share with the fellow slickdealers.

The 32gb version lets me run 12b (4bit quant) local llms with 100k context (with no ssd swap) and get ~15-20tok/sec depending on the model. I can even run 70b (2 bit) models on it (but only at a miserably slow 2-3 tok/sec though).
I also use crossover/sikarugir/wine and get way better gaming performance on it than my ryzen 7 7735hs 32gb ram minipc (steady 4k@30fps using fsr quality for path of exile 2 at medium/high settings). The minipc can only run poe2 at 1080p @ 30 or so fps for comparison.
If all you're wanting is casual use, browsing, productivity, etc., then the 24gb will more than be enough. If you're wanting to do heavy 3D/video editing or run local llms with longer contexts, then obviously 24gb probably isn't the best choice. Personally I wouldn't bother modding the internal ssd for storage—just use an external nvme via tb4. Tb4 will be the bottleneck for speed (approx. 3250mb/s). Hope this helps.
